I’m smoking a new arrival to Holt’s, AJ Fernandez 20th Anniversary Toro, which is a limited-edition cigar blended to commemorate the AJ’s twentieth year as a premium cigarmaker. The 20th Anniversary is rolled in a single size, a chunky 6-by-56 Toro finished in a dark, oily wrapper dressed in gold and black cigar bands with a cedar sleeve covering the bottom half.

Topped with a symmetrical head and triple-seam cap, this fat cigar has a full draw and even combustion. The smoke is robust and leathery, with woody undertones. Sweet coffee, earth and a slight nutmeg note precede the black-cherry finish.

I have not come close to smoking all of the different blends that AJ Fernandez has created over the years, but out of the ones I have smoked, the AJ Fernandez 20th Anniversary Toro is easily good enough to land near the top of that list. While the profile includes an aggressive amount of spice in the first third, that note recedes enough so that the flavors in the profile have a chance to shine. In the end, the AJ Fernandez 20th Anniversary Toro is everything I want in a commemorative blend to be: extremely complex, well-constructed and enjoyable.

The AJ Fernandez 20th Anniversary Toro was a solid cigar. I really liked the Nicaraguan flavor profile delivered, and it was filling on many levels. Construction was perfect with the cigar as well. I thought the size was a little large, I would have preferred a 54 or 52, but it still smoked great for being as large as it was. It kept my interest from beginning to end. I enjoyed the cinnamon, cocoa and pepper quality profile delivered.
