The Rubin brothers, sons of Alec Bradley founder Alan, have adopted the esthetic of an Eastern art form and applied it to cigars for a high-minded brand called Alec & Bradley Kintsugi. Kintsugi is a Japanese art dating back to the 15th century that places emphasis on imperfection—broken pottery is shattered and then repaired with gold or silver thus highlighting the cracks and bringing a new form. With this concept in mind, the Rubins created Kintsugi as a metaphor for the cigar industry, which they believe is fragmented. Unbroken, however, is the clear rendition of flavor that’s so artfully conveyed by the corona gorda: dried fruit, cinnamon, espresso bean and hazelnut come together for a complete picture.

Alec & Bradley, sons of Alec Bradley founder Alan Rubin, announced their third regular production line back in March of 2020: Alec & Bradley Kintsugi (pronounced Kint-Su-Gee). Kintsugi was scheduled for Fall 2020, but did not ship until December of 2020. This follows Blind Faith from 2018 and Gatekeeper from 2019. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The name comes from a Japanese legend says that a 15th century Japanese Shogun dropped his favorite vase, shattering it to pieces. He then ordered artisans to reconstruct it with gold or silver lacquer- making it even more beautiful. This name they say draws a parallel with the current state of the Premium Cigar Industry. The blend for Kintsugi uses a Habano wrapper from the Trojes region of Honduras, two binders (Nicaraguan and Honduran), and fillers from Honduras and Nicaragua. Kintsugi comes in 24 count a golden filled-in crack pattern. The bands and interior box got their inspiration from traditional Japanese themes and artwork. It is manufactured at the Raices Cubanas Factory in Danli, Honduras and comes in four sizes: Robusto 5” x 50 ($7.95), Toro 6” x 52 ($8.80), Gordo 6” x 60 ($9.85) and Corona Gorda 5 5/8″ x 46 ($7.25).

I knew from the moment I tasted the cold draw that the Alec & Bradley Kintsugi was most likely going to give me a fun ride through flavor town, and thankfully, it did not disappoint. From the extremely sweet and complex first third to both the flowery chocolate and spicy Mexican hot chocolate combinations that dominated the second and final thirds respectively, the Kintsugi never let up and featured quite a bit of nuance and richness as well. In general, I have historically not been a huge fan of the flavor profile that Honduran tobacco has given me, but the Alec & Bradley Kintsugi is easily one of the best blends I have smoked in the past five months.

I’m smoking an Alec Bradley cigar called the Kintsugi in a 5-by-50 Robusto. The Kintsugi line is named for the ancient Japanese art of repairing shattered pottery with gold lacquer that accentuates the cracks. I can’t say I’ve got any Kintsugi on display in my home, but I do have small children and a few tubes of superglue in the kitchen. Brand founder Alan Rubin named Alec Bradley Cigars after his sons, Alec and Bradley, and in recent years, the two have been taking on more responsibility in the company, including blending and producing their own cigar lines.

The Alec & Bradley Kintsugi Robusto was an overall average tasting experience. The overall feel was, there's nothing off-putting about the cigar and technically (burn and draw), it performed well. But I wanted more than an average array of flavors of cedar, hay and nuts. I wanted fuller flavors in spice, earth and sweetness.

Alec Bradley Kintsugi Wabi Sabi is a limited-edition cigar blended by AJ Fernandez in Nicaragua with an Ecuadorian Habano Wrapper, Mexican binder, and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos. These cigars became available in August 2025 in one Toro (6 x 52) size priced at $12.49 per stick. This cigar is a follow-up to the Alec Bradley Kintsugi cigar that was released during 2020, with the Corona Gorda size being ranked the #25 of the year for 2021 byCigar Aficionado. The sample Alec Bradley Kintsugi Wabi Sabi cigar started off with a modest spicy flavor that lasted for about five minutes before it started to fade. At this point, the tastes of bread and leather began to take over. The body of the smoke was medium-plus. The cigar then gradually started to become smoother. I ashed the cigar for the first time 25 minutes after lighting up. A minor touch-up was needed shortly thereafter as the body became a bit fuller, approaching the medium-to-full range. A second touch-up was needed at the 40-minute mark, and the strength of the cigar ticked up a bit, but it was not overpowering. I ashed the cigar for the second time about five minutes later. After 50 minutes of smoking time, the cigar went out and required a relight. At the 65-minute mark, a third touch-up was applied to keep the burn even. By this point, the leather flavor was becoming predominate. After 82 minutes of total smoking time, the cigar went out by itself with 2½ inches remaining. Throughout the smoking session, the cigar had a very good draw and held a long ash. However, after burning evenly during the first 25 minutes, the cigar needed three touch-ups and one relight during the remainder of the smoke, after the first ashing. I enjoyed the sample Alce Bradley Kintsugi Wabi Sabi Toro throughout the entire 82-minute smoking session. Except for a few corrections to the burn line and one relight, the cigar was still well constructed and provided a very good draw, and also held a long ash. For the most part, the flavors were smooth and enjoyable, and the strength was not overpowering. I rate it with a very good 4+ points on a 5-point scale.
