Black Works Studio Boondock Saint Corona Larga

Blind Man's Puff · Feb 28, 2018 · August 2017

Black Works Studio (BLK WKS) to announced the BOONDOCK SAINT back in August. “The Boondock Saint is a perfect example of a balanced cigar. The profile is rich, complex and bold, with tons of subtle flavors. The cigar is both strong and refined, with a very elegant finish. The Pennsylvania Broadleaf wrapper combined with the Connecticut Broadleaf & Nicaraguan filler create flavors of anise, clove, dark fruits, bitter cocoa and earth. This blend highlights the many complexities in the broadleaf and Nicaraguan tobaccos used,” said James Brown, creator of BLK WKS and partner at Fabrica Oveja Negra. Today we are reviewing the Black Works Studio Boondock Saint Corona Larga. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. BOONDOCK SAINT is available in limited quantities at select BLK WKS retailers. BLK WKS cigars are an expression of art showcasing the talent, technique and tobacco behind boutique cigar factory; Fabrica Oveja Negra. BLK WKS cigars are available for purchase through Boutiques Unified.

Black Works Studio Boondock Lancero

Halfwheel · Apr 5, 2026 · February 2026

The most difficult reviews for me to hit publish on are the ones where construction issues torpedo each cigar. I struggle with the utility of a review that has the caveat of “the construction was so bad, who knows what the flavor was supposed to be like.” However, the most difficult reviews for me to write are of cigars like this, ones where the profile is incredibly homogenous. While I don’t think James Brown and I have ever discussed his blending philosophy, I’m led to believe that his is one that is like that of the heavily peated Scotch producers. The Black Works Studio Boondock Lancero would certainly be analogous to some of those whiskies. The complexity is in this very specific dark earth profile. There are lots of other flavor sensations besides “dark earth,” but it would be incredibly easy to describe the cigars as just that. I wish it had been possible for me to review the three cigars side-by-side-by-side, better able to experience their nuances and differences directly. While combustion cost this cigar a few points, it was otherwise very enjoyable and the task of reviewing it has at least opened up a door for me to personally try to better understand how Brown goes about blending. I’ll take a good cigar any day of the week, but it’s even more fun when one makes me think.
