Black Label Trading Co. Orthodox Toro
Stogie Press · May 6, 2024
Black Label Trading Co (BLTC) introduced what they describe as their boldest blend to date at this year’s Premium Cigar Association (PCA) trade show. The new Limited Release, ORTHODOX, hand crafted at Fabrica Oveja Negra in Esteli, Nicaragua has started to ship to retailers this week and it is one you want to get your Read more about Cigar Review: Black Label Trading Co. The Orthodox by Black Label Trading Company presents a fascinating case of expectations versus reality. Marketed as an "extremely bold" return to BLTC's roots, what I discovered instead was a remarkably approachable, full-flavored maduro that delivers on intensity without relying on overwhelming strength. From its attractive pigtail cap to the final puffs of burnt sugar taffy and anise, this cigar showcases a consistently sweet, creamy profile that doesn't get distracted with overly charred qualities. Despite minor technical issues—a slightly wavy burn, somewhat flaky ash, and a draw that's a touch firm—the Orthodox impresses with its chocolate-forward character, balanced complexity, and excellent texture. Limited to 54,000 cigars across three sizes and clocking in at just over an hour of smoke time, this is precisely what a modern maduro should aspire to be: full-flavored, complex, and consistent.

This inky, pigtailed robusto draws and burns evenly. A heady foundation of charred wood and earth is enlivened by impressions of coffee and fruit. Touches of red pepper spice and leather precede a strong coffee finish.

While I don't smoke Black Label Trading Co.'s offerings on a regular basis—or any company's, for that matter—I was a bit surprised to see that the company was releasing a cigar designed to get back to its roots. I never thought that that the company had necessarily deviated from its roots, but rather had simply evolved and expanded over the years. I find it interesting that James Brown said "at our core we are about highlighting the strength & intensity of Nicaraguan tobacco," yet neither the wrapper or binder come from Nicaragua. What I will say is that Brown and Black Label continue to get more and more refined with blending and delivering cigars that are more than just strength. The Black Label Trading Co. Orthodox Corona Gorda is a cigar that moves quickly, pulls no punches, and hits a lot of the right flavor notes with deftness and accuracy. For a no-nonsense cigar, the Orthodox Corona Gorda delivers from the first puff to the last.

This Black Label Trading Co. Orthodox Corona Gorda was a wonderful cigar and a fantastic corona gorda. It was balanced, rich and flavorful. We’ve been smoking a lot of Mexican offerings, but none like this. It delivered the rich earth and cocoa qualities, but lots of strong earth, spices and wood as well. Great burn and draw. You could make an argument that the appearance of the cigar is a little much, but it is also in line with what BLTC has released. Yes, I will smoke again.
