The original Camacho Coyolar line was released in 2005 before Davidoff took over Camacho. This Honduran puro was discontinued in 2013 when the company re-branded all its lines. In 2018, the line was re-introduced and re-blended with the brands’ new look and feel for bands and boxes. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The tobacco for this cigar is said to all come from the same 15 acre plot where “ Coyolar was first born”. It is still a Honduran puro and the blend uses criollo tobacco, not the usual corojo the company is known for. The new version comes in the same vitolas as the original and in boxes of 25 cigars: Perfecto #1 (4 1/2 x 50) — $8.50, Rothschild (4 1/2 x 50) — $8.50, Super Toro (6 1/2 x 52) — $9, Titan (6 x 60) — $10.00, Figurado (6 x 54) — $9.50. Camacho Coyolar is rolled at Diadema Cigars de Honduras, S.A., in Danlí, Honduras.

Finely constructed with a neat head and cap. The cigar burns evenly, imparting a spicy, leathery smoke with touches of brown sugar, ground pepper and coconut.

Recently a common thead across the brands of Davidoff has been the resurrection of several discontinued lines. Back in 2013, the Camacho brand underwent a major revamping. If you felt like Camacho’s BOLD advertising campaign wasn’t living up to the name: here you go. The Camacho Coyolar is powerful, perhaps the strongest cigar amongst the hundreds currently offered for sale by Davidoff of Geneva USA. All that potency delivers tons of flavors, though the balance is obviously struggling. The good news is, there seems to be the classic indications of a cigar that will benefit for some rest and as such, it’s definitely going into the redux box for me to revisit in the year. That being said, if you are into strong cigars that aren’t pepper and earth bombs from start to finish—this is a good option—albeit with quite a bit of pepper and earth at times.

In remembering how the original Coyolar smoked, I would say this cigar is not as strong as that but it has more flavors than the original. Of all the Camacho offerings that have been re-released/modified since Davidoff took over, this is the closest to what the old Camacho Coyolar smoked like. A solid cigar that will do well with the old Camacho fans that loved the strong Honduran smokes.
