Last April, in their first new regular production cigar since 2020, Cohiba introduced the Riviera. This blend stands out as not only Cohiba ‘s first venture into Mexican San Andrés wrapper, but also the brand’s first box-pressed offering. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Crafted at STG Estelí in Nicaragua, the Riviera combines a Honduran-grown Connecticut binder and a blend of fillers that includes Honduran Jamastran and La Entrada leaves, along with Nicaraguan Condega and Estelí tobaccos. The cigar is available in three sizes: Robusto (5” x 52), Toro (6.5” x 52), and Perfecto (6” x 60), with the Robusto and Toro presented in boxes of 20 and the Perfecto in boxes of 10. Prices range from $19.99 to $23.99 per cigar.

The Cohiba Riviera Robusto represents many firsts for General Cigar Co. It’s the first time a non-Cuban Cohiba has placed on Cigar Aficionado’s Top 25 rankings since it began in 2004. It’s also the first Cohiba in a Mexican wrapper, as well as the first time General’s Cohiba has ever been box-pressed. Riviera debuted in 2023 as a three-size line produced in Nicaragua. The Mexican San Andrés wrapper covers a Honduran broadleaf binder and a filler blend of Honduran and Nicaraguan tobacco. This bold Robusto delivers a chocolate-like smoke with notes of oak, spice and leather before a sweet and nutty finish.

Eight months ago, my main issue with the Cohiba Riviera Lancero was simple: the first third was extremely spicy, to the point where the overall profile—not to mention the final score—was negatively affected. My hope for this cigar was that eight months of rest would tame that overwhelming spiciness, not only to allow more flavors to shine through but also to bring more balance to the overall experience. Thankfully, my patience was rewarded. Not only was that spiciness noticeably less aggressive but there were some new flavors to be had, including almonds, dry tea leaves and a wonderful chocolate sauce sweetness on the retrohale. All three aspects of the construction were excellent—I only needed to touch up the burn once, and it was minor in nature—leading to a more balanced, more flavorful and more enjoyable cigar overall.

Cohiba Riviera Lancero is the first Cohiba made in the Lancero (7 x 38) size. These box pressed cigars were released in May 2024 and retail for $14.99 per single. They are made in Nicaragua with a Mexican San Andres wrapper, Honduran-grown Connecticut seed binder, and a blend of filler tobaccos from Nicaragua and Honduras. The new Lancero joins three other vitolas ofCohiba Riviera Cigarsthat were previously released. For more information about Cohiba Riviera Lancero cigars, please check out thepress release. The sample Cohiba Riviera Lancero cigar was very easy to light (almost as easy as a cigarette) and started off with a very pleasing full, rich and somewhat earthy tobacco flavor. Within the first 10 minutes, a subtle creamy leather taste emerged as the texture of the smoke became a bit smoother. At the 10-minute mark, the ash fell off by itself (and every 10 minutes thereafter) before reaching a medium length. The draw was good for being such a long and thin cigar, and it delivered a decent volume of smoke - but as expected, was in no way comparable to a cigar having a larger ring-gauge. The Cohiba Riviea Lancero burned evenly during the entire smoking session, and did not need any touch-ups. However, one relight was required halfway through the 60 minutes that it took me to smoke the cigar all the way down to just 1½ inches remaining. The Lancerovitolais what makes this particular Cohiba Riviera Lancero somewhat unique. It is made with six types of tobaccos (including binder and wrapper), as are the other larger Riviera's previously released. Being a Lancero, it derives more of its flavor from the wrapper than the larger vitolas. It is impressive that four different types of fillers were blended into a box pressed cigar so thin. A cigar having only a 38 ring gauge obviously contains less tobacco than the larger sizes, and can be compared to the others by using our onlineCigar Volume Calculator: The Cohiba Riviera Lancero cigar is a super-premium smoke worthy of a superior rating of 4.25 points on a 5-point scale. The cigar has virtually the same flavor profile as the larger ring sizes, and smokes for a full hour. However, with a price of $14.99, it is a bit more affordable than the larger Cohiba Riviera's priced at $19.99 to $23.99 per cigar.

The Cohiba Riviera Lancero was an enjoyable cigar to review with engaging flavor combinations and complexity through the first and second thirds. I enjoyed the Cohiba Riviera Lancero and I would seek it out again. The price point is pretty average for the 2024 market, and I think the flavor profile is well served by the Lancero vitola.

This cigar is quite diverse and reveals a broad aroma and taste profile. Sweetness and acidity interact; it has aniseed and nutmeg but also roasted brioche. A dense finish with cedar wood.
