Inky black with a jagged cap, this oily robusto has an even draw and fairly even burn that forms a firm, white ash. It’s strong and earthy with heavy notes of coffee bean, smoked hickory and some cherry before a smoky finish that calls to mind peated Scotch.

The Cohiba Royale follows in the footsteps of the Cohiba Silencio and Cohiba Spectre in terms of pricing and packaging. While the Spectre cost $90, the Royal is still a super-premium cigar at $24-$29. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. General Cigar describes the Cohiba Royale as their fullest bodied Cohiba to date. The blend uses a Nicaraguan broadleaf wrapper from Jalapa, a Dominican piloto cubano binder, and fillers from the Jamastran region of Honduras and Nicaragua ‘s Jalapa and Estelí regions. Each tobacco leaf has five to six years of age. This is the first Cohiba rolled at General Cigar Co.’s STG Danlí factory in Honduras. Most Cohiba ‘s are rolled at General Cigar Dominicana in Santiago, with the exception of Silencio from STG Estelí in Nicaragua. Cohiba Royale comes in three vitolas: Gran Royale (4 1/2 x 52) – $23.99, Royale (5 1/2 x 54) – $25.99, Toro (6 x 50) – $28.99. All come in boxes of 10 featuring an arched display tray that makes the cigars looks like they’re floating, a style that was also seen on Habanos S.A.’s Romeo y Julieta Grand Churchills humidor.

If you like spicy, earthy, peppery cigars, this is definitely a cigar for you. It is smooth, with no real harshness, but it is lacking a creaminess to pull it all together. Still, the cigar was enjoyable to smoke, and the medium strength makes it so even a novice smoker can dive in and discover the world of luxury cigars without fear of too much nicotine.

Cohiba Royale cigars became available at retailers during April 2020. These are super-premium cigars available in three sizes, including a Toro (6 x 50) priced at $28.99 and the subject of this review. Cohiba Royale cigars are made with sun-grown Nicaraguan wrappers, Dominican binders, and a blend of Honduran and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos. All of the leaves in the blend have been aged for at least five years. Royale is the first Cohiba cigar made in Honduras, and was blended to be the fullest bodied Cohiba outside of Cuba. For more information about the cigars, please see thepress release. The sample Cohiba Royale Toro cigar began with a deep, rich and full flavor with just a hint of natural tobacco sweetness. The cigar was bold but very well balanced. It was not extra bold nor too strong for most cigar connoisseurs, but this is not a cigar for beginners nor most mainstream cigar smokers. The predominate flavors were earth and leather, with a bit of cedar mixing in after a few minutes. Not much spice, and the boldness of the blend made it more difficult to detect subtle flavor nuances, resulting in a somewhat consistent but enjoyable flavor from start to finish. During the first 40 minutes, I puffed on the Cohiba Royale at a normal pace, but then I slowed down a bit during second half. It took me a total of 80 minutes to smoke the cigar down to 2½ inches remaining, when it went out for the second time. The Royale required a relight at the half-way point, and a couple of minor touch-up/booster lights both before and after midpoint. The burn was mostly even, and the draw was good-to-average. Although I prefer medium-to-full cigars, I also occasionally enjoy full bodied cigars as long as they are well balanced and not overpowering. Cohiba Royale is such a cigar, and is deserving of a superior rating of 4.25 points on a 5-point scale. Not an everyday cigar for the masses by any means (especially at the price), but designed for aficionados who occasionally enjoy a bold and full-bodied super premium cigar that is not overpowering.

The Cohiba Royale comes with a few promises, some of which it does a better job at delivering than others. In terms of boldness, it certainly makes a run at it, though I can't say I haven't smoked the entire portfolio recently enough to lay the superlative on it. But is it a profound smoke? For my palate, no. It has enough points of roughness that overshadow whatever else it might be trying to offer, and when the irritation isn't there, I can't say that the core flavors earn the descriptor. While I'm not quite as enamored with big and bold profiles as I might have once been, I still enjoy them when done right. Unfortunately, the Cohiba Royale doesn't seem to be that cigar.

I loved the flavor profile on the Cohiba Royale Toro Royale and Cohiba has been making some great cigars lately. They're expensive, but tasty. It is possible that Cohiba finally made a cigar worth the price, but its past has hurt in justifying pricier Cohibas.
