The Cohiba Spectre CS19 is everything one could want when spending $90 for a cigar. While not as good as the Davidoff Oro Blanco , a $500 cigar, I have a lot of the same thoughts about this release. From the packaging to the cigar itself, this is what you would want if you are going to commit to spending that much money for something you light on fire. Last year’s release of Spectre was decent; the packaging was pretty, but the cigar was average. Not in 2019. There’s a sense when struggling, err opening, the tubos up that this is different, this year General figured out its mistakes from 2018. That extends through the dynamic first third to the final puffs; the Spectre is that rare meeting of different and very good: it’s special.

Cohiba Spectre is General Cigar's most expensive cigar, and is by far the most expensive and exclusive cigar that I ever had the pleasure of smoking and reviewing. The retail price for a single Cohiba Spectre cigar is $90, which is almost triple the price of the second most expensive and exclusive cigar that I have ever smoked or reviewed, and I've been reviewing premium handmade cigars since 2006, and smoking them since the early 1990's. These cigars are slated for release during late October 2018, and will be available in only one vitola measuring 7¼ inches in length with a ring gauge of 54. So why is this cigar so expensive? Here are just a few of the reasons:Supply and demand, only 180 boxes of 10 cigars were produced.Made with very rare tobaccos, eight varietals from five countries.Use of exclusive fermentation and proprietary deep aging techniques.Handmade exclusively by just one expert roller and one expert buncher, both having decades of experience. The Cohiba Spectre cigar began with a nice sweet and mellow earthy flavor along with some leather, cedar, hints of spice and a trace of pepper. During the first 15 minutes, the smoke became even smoother as some of the sweetness, spice and pepper started to fade. The smoke was at the lower end of the medium-to-full bodied range during the first half-hour or so, then gradually moved to the upper end of that range by the one-hour mark. By that point, leather had taken over as the predominant flavor until the end of the cigar. It took me 90 minutes to smoke the Cohiba Spectre down to two inches remaining. During that time, the cigar had a great draw, even burn and held a long ash. No relights nor touch-ups were needed. The Cohiba Spectre cigar was impeccably constructed and well balanced with layers of complexity. The smoke was rich and elegant. Cohiba Spectre is a cutting edge cigar that pushes the envelope with its unique characteristics. Although expectations are very high for such a cigar, nobody should expect a $90 cigar to be three times better than a $30 cigar. Beyond a certain point, the cost to make a very good product marginally better will rise at a much higher rate than the degree of improvement achieved. This is called the law of diminishing returns. Just as an example, is it worth paying 200% more to get a 5% improvement? In some cases, it might be. Due to the high price of a Cohiba Spectre cigar, there is probably nothing that anyone could say or do that would convince most people to buy one. This cigar is not made for the average cigar smoker, with very few exceptions. It might be purchased as a gift for a fellow cigar connoisseur who would really appreciate and enjoy it, or perhaps acquired to celebrate averyspecial occasion. I rate it with an excellent 4.5 points on a 5-point scale. This may not have been the very best cigar that I have ever smoked, but it was definitely the most expensive and exclusive. Smoking a $90 cigar is certainly a most unique and memorable experience.

The Cohiba Spectre was first shown off and announced at the 2018 IPCPR trade show. It comes in only one size, a 7″ x 54 Churchill and sells for $90 per cigar. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The filler of this cigar uses Dominican piloto cubano leaf aged in terrcios since it was harvested in 1995. Terrcios are a way of aging tobacco by using the leaves of a royal palm free. The rest of the blend encompasses tobacco grown in Estelí, Nicaragua from 2011-2014 aged in sherry barrels from Spain, and three Honduran leaves Olancho San Agustin (2002), the Jamastran Valley and La Entrada (2011). The wrapper is Ecuadorian Sumatra using upper primings. General Cigar says the leaves “developed a unique reddish hue” and were then aged more. Only 180 boxes of 10 cigars were produced. When being rolled there is only a single buncher Ruben Dario Perez Peña, and a single roller, Xirolma Céspedes. The company says the pair has a combined nearly 50 years of experience. Each of the circular boxes retails for $900.

The dark, oily cover leaf of this toro is gritty to the touch. Leather and minerals dominate this smoke with background notes of earth, oak and cinnamon before the charry finish. The draw is a bit airy, and the burn requires touch-ups.

I am a fan of some cigars that are on the sweeter side, such as the Crowned Heads Le Carême , Dunbarton Sobremesa Brûlée , etc., but those have more going for them than simply straight sweetness; which, at times, is how I think of this one. But then, at other times, I marvel at just how delicious the Spectre was. I guess this speaks to the lack of balance for the blend. Some moments were sublime—as good as any cigar I’ve ever had—other moments were beyond boring; I found them lacking, in fact. And those moments were often on the heels of each other. This cigar was like eating too much ice cream. I love ice cream. It is kind of the best thing ever. What is better than a bowl of the finest fresh vanilla ice cream? Well, this cigar is kind of like sitting down to a five-gallon bucket of ice cream.

Spectre starts out with a bit of a plug situation. I employ my trusty corn nubber to resolve the issue. It’s not even a designer nor an expensive corn nubber, but it came to the rescue. That, and I had to lightly roll the plug that was about an inch from the cap.A lot of spice pours through. A lot.

Overall, the Cohiba Spectre CS19 is a good cigar. I love the dark flavor profiles that are delivered and they go well with the strength and body level. There was a nice complexity present with the cigar, depth as well, and the transitioning was solid throughout.
