Despite the sloppy cap and lopsided head, this fat cigar draws and burns evenly. It’s nutty and earthy with hints of coconut and orange peel but the finish leaves a slightly chalky sensation on the palate.

The E.P. Carrillo Honduras Gordo is a tale of two rather distinct experiences packed into one cigar. The first two-thirds are quite good, rich with earth, pepper, a bit of creaminess and some dry wood. The flavors work well together and, perhaps most notably, don't play all the familiar notes of a cigar dominated by Honduran tobacco. The final third is a different story, as the refinement of those first two thirds quickly unravels as the flavor gets muddled and muted before turning hot, and showing the aspects of Honduran tobacco that I'm least crazy about. The first two thirds are certainly recommendable, but be ready to put the cigar down not too long into the final third if the experience is anything like mine.

E.P. Carrillo Honduras Robusto

The E.P. Carrillo Honduras Robusto had a pleasant start to it, with engaging flavor combinations through the first third. As the cigar continued, the more complex components fell away for me, and while it was still pleasant, it was a step back from the start. I find the price point attractive on these, I might be tempted to light up another although I don't know whether I would actively seek it out.
