E.P. Carrillo La Historia E-III

Cigar Aficionado · Jan 1, 2015

In the world of cigars, it's hard to find a man more experienced—or more respected—than Ernesto Perez-Carrillo. He got his start in the cigar business making La Gloria Cubanas in a modest factory located in the heart of Little Havana, Miami's Calle Ocho. Around 1990 he was selling standout, handmade cigars for less than $2 each. A newfound interest in cigars (and an article in a certain magazine) turned his company into a gem, and he couldn't keep up with the demand. La Glorias went from curiosity to institution, and Perez-Carrillo expanded into the Dominican Republic, vastly expanding the production of La Gloria Cubana cigars. Perez-Carrillo sold his business in 1999, and left the company in 2009. He set out to try something new, forming EPC Cigar Co. with his children, Lissette and Ernesto III that same year. On the fifth annivesary of the new venture, Perez-Carrillo has hit his stride. His La Historia is decorated with various images, including his grandmother in a Pinar del Río tobacco field and his daughter in Miami. The Perez-Carrillos worked two years on this cigar, and it shows in the final product, which is finished with a luxurious, dark leaf of Mexican tobacco grown in the San Andrés Valley. Ernesto Perez-Carrillo has created many great cigars in his 40-plus years in business. His La Historia is his best effort in years.

E.P. Carrillo Perez-Carrillo La Historia E-III

Cigar Coop · Dec 23, 2014

E.P. Carrillo La Historia E-III At the 2014 IPCPR Trade Show in Las Vegas, Nevada E.P. Carrillo launched a line that had been talked about for quite some time – the E.P. Carrillo Perez-Carrillo La Historia.  Word of that project first surfaced back in January 2013 on the Cigar Dave Show when it was noted that a […]

E.P. Carrillo La Historia Dona Elena

Blind Man's Puff · Dec 7, 2020 · July 2014

E.P. Carrillo debuted the La Historia line at the 2014 IPCPR trade show. The La Historia is a tribute to Ernesto’s mother, and his entire family. Each vitola is named after a different family member. La Historia falls at the top of their portfolios pyramid along with the Encore as the company’s more premiere lines. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend for E.P. Carrillo La Historia uses uses a Mexican San Andrés wrapper, Ecuadorian Sumatra binder, and Nicaraguan fillers. It comes in five sizes: El Senador: 5 3/8 X 52, Regalias D’ Celia Piramides: 5 7/8 X 58, Doña Elena: 6 1/8 X 50, Regalias d’Celia box-pressed 5 7/8 x 58, and E-III: 6 7/8 X 54.

E.P. Carrillo La Historia

Cigar Dojo · May 24, 2016

Ernesto Perez Carrillo made the right step with the La Historia, in my opinion. I like to see a new brand find what it really identifies with, and the La Historia does just that. La Historia not only provides a rich history, but a great experience as well. It may be low in complexity, but that’s not a bad thing, as a good, consistent cigar is always a nice addition to any humidor. However, with its meaty and intensely smokey flavors, I wouldn’t classify this as an accessible cigar by any means. It’s something to be enjoyed at night, after a nice meal, and only for the "seasoned" cigar smoker. I like the turn La Historia took, and I’m excited to see more of this from Ernesto in the future.

E.P. Carrillo La Historia

Holt's Staff Reviews · Apr 9, 2020

As the original master cigarmaker behind the La Gloria Cubana franchise, Ernesto Perez-Carrillo needs little introduction despite his humble beginnings. He took over a fledgling cigar-making operation from his father in the late 1970s. He caught the attention of the editors of Cigar Aficionado in the early 1990s when the publication was itself a fledgling enterprise. A steady stream of positive reviews from the critics preceded Perez-Carrillo’s cigar portfolio as the Cigar Boom of the 1990s kicked into gear, triggering explosive demand.

E.P. Carrillo La Historia Doña Elena

Developing Palates · Feb 26, 2021 · August 2014

The E.P. Carrillo La Historia Doña Elena started nicely with a good combination of flavors and transitioned nicely going into the second third. The enjoyment level dropped a bit in the final third as some char joined in. This is a cigar I would easily come back to and is a bright spot in the brands portfolio. I also think the price point fits the enjoyment level nicely.
