E.P. Carrillo Selección Oscuro Especial No. 6

Blind Man's Puff · Nov 20, 2020 · September 2015

E.P. Carrillo unveiled the Selección Oscuro at the 2015 IPCPR Trade Show. We reviewed the Nacionales size when it first came out here and gave it an 87. The look of the line was revamped in 2016 when the company gave their entire brand an overhaul and now look more like the other brands in the portfolio. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The E.P. Carrillo Selección Oscuro uses a Mexican San Andres Oscuro wrapper, Ecuadorian binder, and Nicaraguan fillers. It comes in six sizes: Robusto: 5 X 54, Nacionales: 5 1/2 X 44, Small Churchill: 5 1/2 X 50, Especial No. 6: 6 X 52, Piramides Royal: 6 X 52, Dinamicos: 6 7/8 X 49. All come in boxes of 24 and is rolled like all Carrillo cigars is rolled at Tabacalera La Alianza S.A.

E.P. Carrillo Selección Oscuro Piramides Royal

Cigar Aficionado · Jan 1, 2017

As a cigarmaker who has pretty much done it all, Ernesto Perez-Carrillo has little to prove. He started as a true boutique operation in Little Havana, then became nationally recognized, before eventually selling his operation to one of the biggest cigar companies in the world. After that, he started all over again. So what can someone like Perez-Carrillo give the cigar world that he hasn't already? The answer is the E.P. Carrillo Selección Oscuro Piramides Royal. It's dark and imposing, but don't let that scare you. The blend isn't as aggressive as one might think. While it's certainly full of assertive character, it's nuanced as well. This effect is produced by the creative blending of Mexican wrapper, Ecuadoran binder and Nicaraguan filler. Perez-Carrillo is always playing with different tobaccos and experimenting with blends, and he has the means to do so. He owns the Tabacalera La Alianza factory in the Dominican Republic and is very involved in the sourcing and blending of his tobacco. This cigar is not only full of dried-fruit notes and a chocolate-covered raisin sweetness, but is an exercise in restraint and balance. Perez-Carrillo has redesigned the band, which you see here, but there are still cigars in the market with the original band.

E.P. Carrillo Selección Oscuro Especial No. 6

Cigar Coop · Mar 7, 2016

At the 2015 IPCPR Trade Show, E.P. Carrillo showcased a new Oscuro wrapper offering appropriately called the E.P. Carrillo Seleccion Oscuro. The Seleccion Oscuro was the latest in what has been a series of regular production offerings that E.P. Carrillo had rolled out over the past year and a half. In 2014, the company launched its highly […]

E.P. Carrillo Selección Oscuro Especial No. 6

Halfwheel · Aug 6, 2015 · September 2015[ref]It’s described as late August or early September.[/ref]

Fans of San Andrés tobacco should be feeling pretty excited by now, as the E.P. Carrillo Selección Oscuro showcases a lot to like about the leaf: earth, pepper, and an overall dry profile that does a good job capturing the terroir of the land. While the sweetness really never materialized, it didn't seem to throw the overall flavor profile off, and I'm hopeful that I might find it on future cigars, as this is almost certainly a cigar I will be revisiting when it hits store shelves.

E.P. Carrillo Selección Oscuro Especial No. 6

Developing Palates · Oct 29, 2021 · September 2015

It just seemed that the E.P. Carrillo Selección Oscuro Especial No. 6 ran out of gas in the second third and couldn't maintain the enjoyable profile being produced prior. The price point is very attractive, so the cigar is an easy recommend to try one to see what you think, but I don't really see myself returning to this one on any sort of regular basis.
