Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970 Churchill

Cigar Aficionado · Jan 1, 2023

With new brands and new blends coming to market each year, it’s easy to forget the classics. The Joya de Nicaragua Antaño 1970 Churchill is one such example, and the cigar is classic in every sense: It comes from the oldest producer of handmade cigars in Nicaragua. It’s made in a traditional size. And the blend is what brand owner Alejandro Martínez-Cuenca regards as a quintessential Nicaraguan cigar. By quintessential, he means that the tobacco represents the country’s most important growing regions in a cohesive way, giving us a sense of place and origin. The cigar’s steady balance of earth, sweetness and power also remind us of why the house of Joya de Nicaragua has been standing for so long.

Joya de Nicaragua Antaño CT Robusto

Halfwheel · Aug 27, 2019 · July 2019

This is one of the best Joya de Nicaragua cigars I've smoked and certainly the least expensive of that esteemed tier. For me, the question with this cigar is would it be more Antaño or more Connecticut? As it turns out, the answer—from start to finish—is a very politically correct both. It's never unhinged, but it's also pretty full. It's relatively balanced from start to finish, but it changes in fairly dramatic ways. Joya de Nicaragua has routinely made good cigars only to have them lost in the massive portfolio that is Drew Estate, but I think the Antaño CT has a chance to be different. It's got a bit of a story, it's better priced and it's also just better than most.

Joya de Nicaragua Antaño Robusto Grande (Shut The Box Limited Edition)

Blind Man's Puff · Mar 24, 2021 · August 2020

Dr. Alejandro Martínez Cuenca, Chairman of Joya de Nicaragua, has been playing the Shut the Box game since 2012. He learned how to play at Havana Mix Shop in Memphis, TN. Dr. Cuenca has a PhD in Economics and has always been a fan of numbers and games with numbers. As an homage to the game, Joya de Nicaragua last year released a Special Edition version of the Antaño cigar, designed to play this game using the included dice and box. This version was called Joya de Nicaragua Antaño Shut the Box Limited Edition. The cigars included are the regular Antaño line and in this box, a Robusto Grande size. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Only 500 boxes of the Special Edition boxes were made and in two sizes, for a total of 1000 boxes. The sizes are the company’s signature size, Gran Cónsul which measures 4 ¾ x 60, and Robusto Grande which measures 5 ½ x 52. The boxes cost $182 and $169 respectively. Each box contains 20 cigars, dice, scoring pieces, and the instructions to play the game. The blend for Antaño uses a Nicaraguan Habano Wrapper and Nicaraguan Binder and Fillers.

Agile Cigar Reviews are cigar assessments where we use a lightweight, shorter format. These will never take the place of our comprehensive reviews. They are only used on blends we have previously assessed. This might be a blend we are re-scoring or giving a score for the first time. It might be a blend we […] Key flavors: Cream, Cedar, Tannins, Wood, Bread, Pepper.

Joya de Nicaragua Añtano CT Toro

Developing Palates · Oct 14, 2019 · July 2019

I was impressed with the Joya de Nicaragua Añtano CT Toro for the entire smoking experience. The blend managed to stay in the confines of a traditional Connecticut profile, while bringing some barbecue and bready notes which are components you wouldn't typically expect. Balanced from start to finish, I think Joya de Nicaragua is going to have a solid performance with this release.
