The Kristoff Shade Grown was called the Brittania Reserve when it released and later the name was re-branded. It is described by Kristoff as mild-medium bodied and represents the companies first Shade Grown Connecticut wrapper on a cigar. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend uses a Honduran Connecticut Shade Grown wrapper, Dominican Cuban Seed binder, and Cuban Seed Nicaraguan and Cuban Seed Dominican fillers. The problems with the Kristoff Shade are pretty clear. First, I’m not sure the name change makes the most sense. I understand that not every shade, even Connecticut-seed, will be a shade of mustard; but I think consumers expect a certain color and this isn’t that. Secondly, the flat cap—intentionally or not—would be a lot better as just a regular round cigar. Similarly, I could do without the covered foot. Once all that’s out of the way: if you’d like to get your palate rocked without a huge nicotine hit, I think the Kristoff Shade is an economical enough choice; I’m just not sure that’s the intent.

A good and consistent cigar. I enjoyed the notes of sweet buttered bread, hay, dried nuts and baking spices, all wrapped up in a medium body and strength formula. With a smoking time of near two hours and a very attractive price point of ~$8, the Kristoff Shade Grown Robusto will no doubt be in the rotation of Connecticut shade offerings that I enjoy.
