Unlike most non-Cuban Montecristos, the Espada by Montecristo brand is made in Nicaragua at Plasencia Cigars and is a collaboration between Plasencia and the Altadis blending team, known as the Grupo de Maestros. They're made entirely from Nicaraguan tobacco and come packaged in striking suede boxes of 10. Each cigar is adorned with three bands: a primary Montecristo band, a foot band that reads "Espada" and a certificate wrapped around the middle. Spanish for "sword," Espada is also a reference to the rapiers found on the iconic Montecristo logo, which was reinterpreted for this line. The large Quillon is an exceptional smoke offering the spice of a gingersnap with touches of cinnamon that build to a sweet, spicy finish.

Continuing the newly established Espada brand was a no-brainer for Montecristo. With the success of last year’s release, a darker, and seemingly fuller cigar for fans this year was a good move. With its flashy bands and gorgeous packaging, the Espada line adds a new flair to Montecristo’s offerings, and the ESTOQUE proves to be worthy of the name. Deep, rich, complex flavors make up the Cuban-seed cigar, but its fancy bands and prestigious tobacco (thanks to Plasencia) all comes at an equally "prestigious" price tag.

Overall, this Montecristo Espada Guard was pretty fantastic. I think Altadis and the Plasencia folks did a great job with this blend. It offers up a lot of spice on the flavor wheel but nothing that is overbearing to where it becomes a distraction to your enjoyment. I keep saying it, but the packaging is just fantastic, I can’t say enough about it. I certainly think if you’re on the fence about this cigar then pick it up and give a try and you won’t be disappointed.

Overall, this a good cigar but it has some minor quirks I wish were a little better. It was scoring around 89, almost 90 until the third sample which dropped the average down to 88. I think that with some age, these could get a little better but mostly for me, I wish that everything I saw in the second half of the cigar was the same from the first puff. But as I said, it isn’t a bad cigar and it is still worth trying.

If asked to predict what I expected from the Montecristo Espada Conquistador Ricasso, it wouldn't be too far off from what I got: a roster of solid, familiar flavors executed well, a decently rich and hearty profile, and better-than-average construction. If anything, I thought the cigar could have used some more moments of complexity, along with a bit better performance out of the final third. The first two sections of the cigar do a very good job with the flavor and feel like they are building towards something big and special in that final section, only to have it not show up, and if anything, the flavor goes a bit in the opposite direction. If you've enjoyed other Montecristo Espada releases, or just lean toward the typical medium-full Nicaraguan profile, the Montecristo Espada Conquistador Ricasso should make for an enjoyable smoke.
