Though a bit pale in appearance, this is a hearty cigar defined by its bold, saline, leathery character. Some nuttiness comes through, as does an earthy note, but the leather persists, even onto the toasty finish.

Last year, Oliva released it’s first regular production cigar since 2012. Originally, it was going to be called the Facundo, but was changed before launch to Gilberto. Facundo is the name of the son of Melanio Oliva and father of the family’s current eldest member, Gilberto Oliva Sr. The change was made due to a trademark conflict with rum maker Bacardi, though otherwise the cigars and packaging are mostly unchanged since it’s original inception. Today we are reviewing the Oliva Gilberto Reserva Corona. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. There are two versions of the Gilberto Reserva, the regular version uses an Indonesian Sumatra wrapper over an Ecuadorian binder and Nicaraguan filler and the Blanc uses an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper over an Ecuadorian binder and Nicaraguan fillers. Come in five vitolas and are priced for value: Robusto (5 x 50) — $5.80, Toro (6 x 50) — $6.10, Torpedo (6 x 52) — $6.40, Churchill (7 x 50) — $6.40, Corona (5 3/4 x 43) — $5.25.

I mentioned the Oliva Gilberto Reserva was the cigar from this year’s IPCPR Convention & Trade Show I was really looking forward to smoking. I’ve smoked just about every Oliva there has ever been and I was curious to see what the company had come up with for its first new project in some time. This is certainly an exercise more of making a cigar for the masses than making the best cigar the company can make, but that doesn’t mean it’s a bad cigar. For $6, it’s a really good cigar; an excellent cigar if you couldn't get an Oliva Sere G for the same price, but a good cigar nonetheless. Bolder, a bit heavier, albeit—still a far distance from full—and with impeccable construction. The greatest cigar Oliva ever made? Nope. A cigar that outperforms its price tag? Yep.

Slightly jagged, self-correcting burn. Pack density stays goodly moderate. Calm smoker, paced slowly. Wants to be double/triple puffed... warms-some on account a' that. Syrupy delivery which bitters-some. Purging is recommended. Over-all quite zesty. Mulling spice Leather Soft woods Molasses Red fruit syrup Earth Rather straight-forward but with 'nuff dimension via nuance to stave off being linear. Un-complex. Could use a bit more roundness and back-bone, but is somewhat rich nonetheless. Bigges

I have to say that any cigar introduced today in the below-$10-range immediately brings to mind "budget smoke," and that is more than the case with this one, priced in the rarely-seen $5 range. Budget doesn't mean bad , however! In this case, we are presented with a fresh take on Oliva's Nicaraguan mastery that really pays off with some originality and an enjoyable, although linear, smoking experience. You won't need to be locked in an isolation chamber, focusing all your attention on every nuance of the broad flavor spectrum, chasing transitions and the like. While it's not overly complex, it tastes good enough to keep puffing, and will occasionally offer surprises. But the real payoff is that you won't find many other new offerings that are this good for this price.

The Oliva Gilberto Reserva Corona smokes more like a $7 to $8 dollar cigar as the overall bouquet of flavors doesn't merit a cheap cigar at all. The flavor in itself isn't all that complex but it is enjoyable. For these reasons, I would revisit and many fans of "yard gars" will find this pleasing.
