Padrón cigars enjoy a mammoth legacy thanks to a lengthy list of ratings and awards, including the reigning ‘Cigar of the Year’ title for 2025 with Padrón 60th Anniversary from the critics in Cigar Aficionado, the fifth time the company has earned top cigar honors. Today I’m smoking Padrón Black, a lesser-known blend in the brand’s portfolio, and I’m smoking the No. 99 Maduro, a round 60-ring Gordo with a dark, oily wrapper leaf. Padrón Black cigars debuted in 2016 to commemorate the 89th birthday of brand founder José Orlando Padrón.

A large, solidly made torpedo with a pointy tip and oily wrapper. It’s bold and rich, layered with big notes of earth, pepper, baking spices, wood and coconut. The draw and burn are lush and even.

Padrón Black PB-97 Maduro

I have often been amazed by how Padrón blends toe the line between aggressiveness and balance, and the Black PB-97 Maduro is a great example of this feat. Sure, there is plenty of spice and black pepper—especially in the first puffs—but those notes are tempered expertly by the rich flavors in the profile, a list that includes charred meat, creamy almonds, coffee beans and even some distinct cherry sweetness on the retrohale. Throw in the amazing construction and you are left with a blend that is well worth the effort to track down, even at the price point these are selling at.

Padrón Black Label TAA 2018 No. 89 Maduro

The Padrón Black Label TAA 2018 No. 89 Maduro was a 2018 TAA release, but didn’t ship until February 2019. Unlike many new releases from Padron, which sometimes are just a new size, this is a whole new blend. It only comes in one size, a 6 x 46 corona gorda in two versions, maduro and natural. 10-count boxes sell for $165. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend itself is the same as a 2016 Smoke Inn exclusive made to celebrate José Orlando Padrón’s 89th birthday. Only 200 boxes of 10 were ever made of those.
