Nick Perdomo of Perdomo Cigars has been in the business for more than three decades. Although the company’s 30th anniversary was in 2022, the Perdomo 30th Anniversary Sun Grown brand didn’t come out until late 2023. When we put the entire line through our blind tastings, it ushered in a new era of high scores for Perdomo, but the Epicure size was the true standout. Perdomo says the wrapper of this all-Nicaraguan cigar was aged in Bourbon barrels and the tobacco in the blend was 15 years old before rolling. Oak certainly factors into the taste of this cigar, which also shows notes of leather, caramel and nougat.

The Perdomo 30th Anniversary Sun Grown Epicure represents the company's evolution over three decades in the cigar industry. Featuring 15-year-aged tobaccos throughout, including a bourbon barrel-aged wrapper, this cigar showcases Perdomo's signature style nicely. The smoking experience begins with baking spices and subtle sweetness, progressing to notes of coffee, ginger, and eventually charred oak and peppers. While not overly complex, it delivers a consistently enjoyable medium to medium-plus-bodied smoke. The cigar balances approachability with depth, offering a comfortable draw and cool burn despite occasional unevenness. Additionally, the cigar hits a velvet-like texture unlike I've seen from the company before, which I consider to be the "it factor" for the blend. It's a fitting representation of the company's growth from a small family operation to one of the most impactful players in the industry today.

I’m firing up a chunky 6-by-54 Epicure in the Perdomo 30th Anniversary Sun Grown blend, one of three wrappers Nick Perdomo customarily offers in most of his cigar lines. We’ve already reviewed Perdomo’s 30th Anniversary Connecticut and 30th Anniversary Maduro cigars, which were confident ranking with the best Perdomo cigars we’ve smoked before. It’s a tough job, but somebody’s got to smoke the Sun Grown varietal to tell you how it performs as well.

At its core, the Perdomo 30th Anniversary Sun Grown Torpedo comes across as a slightly lighter-bodied but still full-flavored version of what has been used for the company's other Sun Grown releases. The start is very good, leading with a bright, attention-grabbing wood and pepper combination that wouldn't surprise me to learn is a habano-seed wrapper. From there, there aren't many twists and turns, other than some variation in the intensity of the pepper, the addition of some dry earth, and a more robust final third. At times, however, the chalk that appears in the second half pushes the cigar off course, and in one cigar really hampered the enjoyment of the flavors it had to offer. Construction was solid, assuming a mindful puffing rate, and I didn't need to take much of the pointed head of the cigar in order to get plenty of airflow and subsequent smoke. I am truly puzzled by the chalky note that emerged and was surprised to find a bit of tar in one cigar. While it happens, it just doesn't seem like this would be the kind of cigar that would offer it. I'm still inclined to recommend trying the Perdomo 30th Anniversary Sun Grown, as I'm optimistic that this was simply an unlucky draw of cigars, as the core flavors do offer a lot to be enjoyed, and while we don't factor price into our reviews, knowing that they are offered at a very reasonable price point makes this a pretty solid proposition.
