Last April, General Cigar announced a new regular production line to the Punch brand. Punch Golden Era was designed to celebrate corojo tobacco that had a starring role in the “golden age” of cigars. Corojo had been used as the wrapper of choice on many cigars until tobacco diseases and mold brought the tobacco to the brink of extinction. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The Cuban seed Corojo used in the Punch Golden Era was grown on a 650-acre farm in Honduras by the Eiroa family. The blend uses Honduran-grown, Cuban seed Corojo wrapper and binder, and its filler is comprised of Honduran-grown Habano and Cuban-seed Corojo tobacco. The blend is described as mild-to-medium-bodied and is rolled at Fabrica de Puros Aladino SA in Honduras. This factory is home to the JRE (Aladino) brand. The cigars will come packaged in boxes of 20 and are going to ship to retailers on May 1. The line will launch with three sizes: Robusto 5 x 50 MSRP per cigar $9.99, Toro 6 x 52 MSRP per cigar $10.49, and Churchill 7 x 48 MSRP per cigar $10.99.

This long, thin cigar burns slow and cool, producing a dense smoke with each puff. Sweet and leathery, the cigar also shows notes of caramel, white pepper and earth. The finish is oaky and sweet like a rum barrel.

While I value consistency among cigars, I always like when the three cigars smoked for a review reveal new elements, which is what the Punch Golden Era Robusto did. None of the cigars were wildly different from each other in terms of the flavors they offered or the progression of those flavors, but each one either dove a bit deeper into those flavors or revealed a bit more nuance about the blend. Smoking the Punch Golden Era Robusto served as a great reminder that one cigar is rarely enough to tell the whole story of a blend, whether it be in all that it has to offer or how just a slight bit of variance can affect the balance of the components. Beyond just a successful blend, I must also give credit to the bunchers and rollers who made these cigars, as each one of the three I smoked performed nearly flawlessly. This is a great example of allowing someone outside of the company to put their mark on a heritage brand, and a cigar I not only enjoyed but would recommend giving a try.

Punch Golden Era cigars were introduced during May 2023, in three vitolas priced from $9.99 to $10.99 per cigar.In July 2024, the line was extended to include a Lancero size (7 x 38) priced at $10.99 per stick. The blend is the same, with all sizes of Golden Era cigars being made in Honduras with a Honduran-grown Cuban seed Corojo wrapper and binder, along with fillers comprised of Honduran-grown Habano and Cuban-seed Corojo tobaccos. The sample Punch Golden Era Lancero cigar began with a medium bodied and somewhat dry taste that improved after about 5-10 minutes, when a nutty flavor with hints of spice emerged and continued improving until about the 20-minute mark. After that point, the taste stayed pretty much consistent until the end of the smoking session. It took me 55 minutes to smoke the Punch Golden Era Lancero down to 1½ inches remaining, when it went out by itself. The cigar burned evenly and held a medium-to-long ash. No relights nor touch-ups were needed. The draw was pretty decent for such a relatively thin cigar, but was not comparable to cigars having a larger ring gauge. After sampling several Punch Golden Era Robustos (5 x 50) back in 2023, and not enjoying them very much, I was pleasantly surprised by the new Lancero size. A cigar with a smaller ring gauge has a higher ratio of wrapper to filler tobaccos, which makes the taste of the wrapper more predominate (which is usually a good thing). I rate the Punch Golden Era Lancero cigar with a very good 4 points on a 5-point scale.

This Punch Golden Era Robusto is by far one of the best non-Cuban Punch I have ever had. The interplay of creamed cherries, effervescence and Hawaiian sweet bread was enjoyable every single puff. And for an MSRP of $9.99 per cigar, this is no doubt a box buy.
