Dark and oily with a slightly lumpy head. Vague notes of almonds are overtaken by heavier impressions of earth, dark chocolate and charred wood before the tangy, citrus finish.

General Cigar unveiled new line under their Punch brand earlier this year called “ Knuckle Buster.” The name comes from University of Virginia college basketball coach Tony Bennett, who described the game as rough and tumble “Blue Collar Knuckle Buster.” This cigar from Punch is aimed at hard working, blue collar people at an affordable price. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend is described as a medium-bodied cigar that will appeal to both new and seasoned smokers. Knuckle Buster is rolled at General Cigar ‘s HATSA factory in Danli, Honduras. The blend uses only Habano -seed tobaccos from Nicaragua and Honduras including Nicaraguan Habano wrapper, Nicaraguan Habano binder, and filler tobacco from Nicaragua and Honduras. Punch Knuckle Buster comes in three sizes: Robusto (4.5” x 52) $4.99, Toro (6” x 50) $5.49, Gordo (6.25” x 60) $5.99. The robusto and toro come in boxes of 25, while the Gordo comes in boxes of 20.

What this country needs is a good 5 cent cigar! That is what Thomas R. Marshall, 28th Vice President (1913-1921) said. “…historian John E. Brown has traced the quotation back to the Indiana newspaper cartoonist Kin Hubbard, who put the words in the mouth of his popular character “Abe Martin.” As a fan of the Read more about Cigar Review: Punch Knuckle Buster Toro – Rated 86[…]

There was actually quite a bit to take away from my time with the Knuckle Buster. Throughout my time in the hobby, I have tended to gravitate to the smaller-batch, boutique-style / limited-edition cigars, with the occasional “large brand” thrown into the mix just so I can keep up with what is out there. I have to say, this cigar makes a great attempt to reach out of the market it was created for and nudge the die-hard base. The complexity at the beginning and developing transitions through the halfway point definitely keep me interested and not afraid to share these with hardcore hobbyists. It is leaps and bounds better in overall experience than a good number of “yard 'gars” in the same price range, and would even give a solid fight to some cigars costing a few dollars more.

Punch Knuckle Buster cigars are made in Honduras with a Nicaraguan Habano wrapper, Nicaraguan Habano binder, and a blend of filler tobaccos from Nicaragua and Honduras. These cigars hit the market on March 9, 2020 in three sizes, including a Toro (6 x 50) which was sampled for this review, and priced at a suprisingly affordable $5.49 per stick. For more information about Punch Knuckle Buster cigars, check out thepress release. As advertised, the Punch Knuckle Buster cigar is medium-bodied. The cigar began with a very enjoyable naturally sweet tobacco flavor. After a relight was required at the 10-minute mark, the sweetness faded a bit as a nutty caramel flavor also emerged, but the cigar was still enjoyable. About 20 minutes later, a touch-up was needed to keep the burn even, as the sweet and nutty flavor began to fade, with the taste becoming more leathery. The flavor was still decent, though no longerverygood. At this point, the Knuckle Buster began to taste more like a five-dollar cigar. My smoking session lasted for another 30 minutes, resulting in a total smoke-time of one hour. I smoked the Knuckle Buster down to just over two inches of cigar remaining. The sample cigar was well-made and had a good draw, mostly even burn, and held a medium-to-long ash. It is noted that this brand new cigar rested in my humidor for only four days prior to this review, and has the potential to improve with a little more age. When considering the value factor, I rate the Punch Knuckle Buster cigar with a very good overall rating of 4 points on a 5-point scale. The taste was superior for the first 10 minutes, very good for the next 20 minutes, and good-to-average for the last 30 minutes. Knuckle Buster should appeal to most cigar smokers, from beginners to experienced connoisseurs. Not a cigar for special occasions, but the first half is very enjoyable and overall it is still a great value. UPDATE:Punch Knuckle Buster Maduro Released in 2022

I was completely shocked by the Punch Knuckle Buster Habano Toro. The flavor profile delivered was unique and complex. I did not expect any of this from the cigar, and I wasn't expecting a profile of this nature from Punch. The flavor combination was very enjoyable and one that I have not come across that often in my years of smoking. On top of that, the price is right for this cigar.
