Punch master blender Agustin Garcia set out to create a blend similar to the original Punch blend. To do this they made they used all tobaccos from same countries of origin and the result was the Punch Signature. The blend had started being worked on back in 2012 and wouldn’t see the shelf until 2015. We reviewed this cigar back in 2015 here. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Originally Agustin found a small batch of Ecuadorian tobacco he wanted to use but there wasn’t enough to make Punch Signature a regular production cigar. So he started working with a grower to create a special Ecuadorian Corojo wrapper, just for this cigar. The wrapper used is related to the original Cuban Corojo seed. The rest of the blend uses a Connecticut Habano binder, and filler from Dominican Republic and Nicaragua, the same as the original Punch cigar. Punch Signature comes in five sizes: a 5 x 54 robusto – MSRP $6.79, 6 x 60 Gigante – MSRP $7.39), 4 1/2 x 50 Rothschild – MSRP$5.39, 5 3/4 x 52 torpedo – MSRP $6.99, and Pita (Toro) 6 x 50 MSRPP $8.19. All come in boxes of 18. The packaging and artwork uses artwork originally created in the 1800s for the first Punch cigars. The Punch Signature line got a refresh earlier this year and now instead of having an acrylic window has bi-fold panels with the story of the blend and brand.

The leathery, cedary aspects of this dark, fat cigar are balanced by sweet notes of dried fruit and chocolate. The draw is a bit firm. The wrapper on the cigar is striking, and gleaming with oil.

This is a fun new release that gives smokers the chance to revisit the Punch brand. While I wasn't the biggest fan of the cigar's band (a little plain, if you ask me), the smoking experience was quite the opposite. This is a great everyday smoke that would pair really nicely with a cup of coffee.

I A somewhat hesitant draw out-of-the-gate; double/triple puffs required. Serves to heat the char a tick much and cause a wobble in need a' re-touch, then a slight runner-threat... all in the opening stanza. Flowering ash. Notes: black pepper and bittersweet chocolate with carob-seed honey lilt. Pumpernickel. Toasted leather-wood-earth under-belly. II Smoke-smoke out-put dials back meow, thus cooling burn and allowing mascara to even lo not perfectly-so. A toasting of profile happens. Bread grow

Maybe the third time is the charm. When Punch Signature cigars were introduced in March 2015, I received samples of the Robusto size to review at that time, and then again in August 2016 when the new Pita vitola became available. I was not impressed with either cigar, and the hot spice in both cigars irritated my throat. Fast forward to March 2021, when the packaging for Punch Signature cigars received an update (see press release). However, the blend remained the same. Anyway, I received samples of the Toro/Pita (6 x 50) size to test drive once again, which I let sit in my humidor for almost two months before giving these cigars another shot. Punch Signature cigars are still made in Honduras with a blend of Dominican and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos, where aged fillers are mixed with newer tobaccos. The cigar has an Ecuadorian Corojo wrapper, and the binder is a Connecticut Habano leaf. The SRP of the Pita size is now $8.19 per stick, as of this writing. Although the blend did not change, I noticed some differences/improvements in this new batch of Punch Signature cigars. First of all, the smoke was not as spicy hot as before. Yes, the flavor was still earthy with some "hot" spice, but the spice was much tamer this time and not hot enough to irritate my throat. The flavor of the sample cigar eventually became more leathery as it was smoked, with the earthy spice fading into the background. Secondly, this current cigar is now at the upper end of the medium-bodied range, and is not as bold nor full as before. I don't know if recent harvests of the tobaccos used today are consistent with several years ago (or maybe the some of the same tobaccos have been aging), or if my palate has just become more acclimated to bolder cigars over the years. The sample Punch Signature was very well made and had a good draw, mostly even burn, and held a long ash. It took me 75 minutes to smoke the cigar down to two inches remaining, without the need for any relights and just one minor touch-up. I don't usually acquire cigars that I haven't enjoyed much in the past, and certainly not for a third time. But in this case, I'm glad that the most recent samples just happened to come my way. This time, I'm giving Punch Signature Pita cigars a much better rating of 3.75 points on a 5-point scale.

The Punch Signature Robusto is undoubtedly in a better place now than where it was a year ago; the blend is finally able to show off the flavors that I would have to assume Agustin Garcia intended for it to be known for, while many of the rougher spots have smoothed themselves out. Even after a year, it still feels like more time is needed, but at least I can now say there’s hope for this cigar, something I didn’t think I’d ever say a year ago.
