Southern Draw partnered with A.J. Fernández before he became the most sought-after cigarmaker in the industry. With countless options from Fernández's factory now available, it's becoming increasingly clear that Southern Draw is offering among the best, if not the best cigars to come out of Fernández's Estelí-based factory. While the original Rose of Sharon provided a flavorful preview as to Southern Draw's Connecticut capabilities, the Desert Rose takes the torch and runs with it. This cigar shows a familiar profile to its predecessor, only the experience is amplified on every level. It is not a modern Connecticut in the sense that it offers unnecessary/unwanted strength; instead, it earns its "amped-up" status through loud and lively flavors, tremendous balance, and a long-lasting finish. Desert Rose may, in fact, be the new standard as to what an amped-up/modern Connecticut represents.

Back in September last year, Southern Draw announced two new sizes to the Rose of Sharon Desert Rose: the Desert Rose Famous Exclusivo (Exclusive to Famous Smoke Shop) and the Desert Rose Lonsdale. At the time, they also made the original Desert Rose size, Belicoso Finos 5.5×54, a regular production cigar in both 20 count boxes and 20 count bundles. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The Rose of Sharon Desert Rose Lonsdale measures 6 x 44 and rolled like all other Southern Draw cigars at AJ Fernandez Cigar Co. It has a “flag” cap and comes in boxes of 12 designed by Humidif Group USA. Only 4,000 boxes of the Lonsdale were made and they sell for $121.00. The blend for all three Desert Rose cigars uses an Ecuador “cloud grown” Claro wrapper, Nicaragua Habano binder, and filler from Honduras and Dominican Republic – Corojo 99 and Piloto Cubano.

Though dented and bumpy, this very long cigar draws well and burns evenly. It’s an oaky, toasty smoke with hints of vanilla, spice and hazelnut before a finish that calls to mind an oaky Chardonnay.

There are a lot of cigars that I wish I could smoke at four- to six-month intervals to see how they evolve with time, and after waiting two years to smoke the Southern Draw Rose of Sharon Desert Rose Lonsdale, I'm inclined to want to add this cigar to that list. While the flavor is still very vibrant, it feels like it is starting to show some signs of its age. They also feel like they have coalesced in the humidor, coming together much like the components of a long-simmered stew would. While it still didn't pack as much of a punch as I thought it might, there is still a pretty heavy ligero pepper that steers much of the cigar's journey, but it also takes enough breaks to let other flavors shine direct things for a bit. Two years later, I'm still impressed by the cigar, and if anything more intrigued by it as I wish I had been able to document more steps on its journey.

Holt's Staff Reviews · Apr 21, 2023
I don’t smoke a cigar every morning, but when I do, I’m particular about what I pull from my humidor, and the 5.5-by-52 Belicoso Fino in the Rose of Sharon blend from Southern Draw fits the bill for a mellower smoke you can savor with coffee when the sun is coming up. I’ve got a young family at home, so I hit the hay early. That way I can be up at the crack of dawn to get my workout in and, God willing, get enough time to myself to smoke a cigar on my front porch on occasion.Read full review on Holt's Staff Reviews

It's always a pleasant surprise when you light up a cigar and immediately know you're in for something special. I thoroughly enjoyed the Southern Draw Rose of Sharon Desert Rose, and look forward to my earliest opportunity to light one up again.
