An oily, box-pressed cigar with an even, open draw. Sweet and spicy notes of brown sugar, pepper and toffee are underscored by a foundation of nuts, wood and coffee bean. The cigar is rolled with a closed foot.

I am always honored to support a Veteran-owned business and love companies that produce memorable cigars. Southern Draw is both (an absolute win win), and the Holt family definitely has something to be proud of here. Instead of trying to tweak the blend of a cigar that was already good, they came up with a reimagined version that is a completely new blend. Kudzu Lustrum is undoubtedly a fitting tribute to their first five years in the premium cigar industry. With the robustness of this blend, these should age extremely well and only get better. Souther Draw plans to release a Lustrum cigar every five years, which should create a fun challenge (at least for collectors like me). Though each new release is planned to play off of other releases in the SD portfolio, it will be fun and interesting to compare this cigar with age against the future blends to come—who knows what experimental tobaccos this Texas-based brand will have their hands on by 2024...

When I lit my first Southern Draw Kudzu Lustrum Belicoso Fino, there was a side of me that was concerned that it was going to be nothing more than a strength bomb that was going to be so rooted in strength that nothing else would show through. While it's not shy with strength, earth and pepper, it doesn't overdo it for the most part, managing to deliver an enjoyable flavor profile backed by the hearty terroir of Nicaragua and particularly the Ometepe region. The draw and burn are both impeccable, making it a problem-free cigar, an added bonus and bit of praise to heap on top. If strength isn't a concern, the Southern Draw Kudzu Lustrum Belicoso Fino is certainly worth lighting up both to celebrate the anniversary of the company and for a solid smoke in its own right.

When the weather warms up and the water’s back in the pool, it’s grillin’ time in my backyard, and that means I need a steady surplus of cigars I can smoke casually that won’t bankrupt my vacation budget. On the docket for today is Southern Draw Kudzu, and I’m smoking a 6.5-by-60 Gordo. For just over two hundred bucks for a 20-count box, Kudzu is a littler pricier than I’ll normally spend on an everyday cigar, but since I’m doing a review, this one is technically on the house – and that makes it great fodder for finding out if I should invest in a whole box.
