Illusione Garagiste

Hands down, Garagiste is one of the best releases yet from Illusione

Tightly-rolled w/ a draw to only somewhat match -- pulls satiate, nonetheless. Chocolate. Buttered cinnamon toast. That's there on the aroma, as well. Deep dark baccy core with spices displaying more sweet-brightly. Peppery up-front. Merlot addition finish. Burns on a line with a slow-stacking ash.

The Illusione Garagiste is a new offering that made its debut at the 2016 IPCPR Trade Show. The Garagiste was part of a major product expansion by Dion Giolito’s Illusione brand. In terms of the cigar name, it has ties to the wine industry. A Garagiste refers to a group of winemakers who are somewhat considered […] Key flavors: Earth, Raisin, White Pepper, Natural Tobacco.

Rolled with a three-seam cap, this cigar leaves pleasing notes of juniper, fresh tobacco and spice on the palate. There is a touch of brown-sugar sweetness on the finish.

Illusione Garagiste takes on a winemaking theme to showcase the craft and small batch nature of the decade-old company. The cigars focus on Criollo '98 and Corojo '99 tobaccos, including ligero primings from two Nicaraguan regions. Where Illusione is typically known for nuanced, classic, bright profiles that cater complexity over strength, Garagiste flips the script. The cigars are near full strength, with flavors showing little complexity and instead providing a solid base behind the cigar's progressing strength output. Flavors are warm and hover around caramel, leather, and raw spices. While Garagiste serves the role of expanding the company's flavor portfolio, it didn't showcase enough of an "it factor" to warrant repeat smoking sessions, in my opinion.

Halfwheel · Dec 21, 2016 · July 2016
Everything about the Illusione Garagiste screams “Not your normal Illusione,” from the somewhat monochromatic color scheme on the band to the obvious strength in the profile. While the blend is not overly complex at any point, the cigar is nicely balanced and obviously well-blended. However, the big story is the strength, which—while well integrated—is very obvious from the first puff. Although it is far from my favorite Illusione release—and not even my favorite Illusione cigar this year—the Garagiste is a very good cigar, and will be a welcome addition to those seeking a stronger choice in Giolito's lineup.

After smoking through many Illusione corojo and criollo centric cigars, and now the new Connecticut shade and Equador Habano, it's right and safe to say that Dion is a superb master blender. He just doesn't miss.
