Celebrated as Cigar Aficionado's #2 Cigar of the Year in 2004, La Aurora Cien Años was created to commemorate the factory's centennial. Rolled as an ultra-rare 100% Dominican Corojo puro using leaves harvested in 1996, this medium-to-full-bodied legend provides extraordinary depth with cracked black pepper, seasoned leather, roasted coffee, rich earth, and citrus.

The dark, veiny wrapper of this robusto is coarse to the touch. Drawing and burning evenly, it starts out quite bold with notes of earth, pepper and leather but settles into a warm, sweet palate of vanilla, caramel and a touch of allspice. The nutty finish hints at walnut.

I was not in the least surprised to find out these specific cigars were from the original release back in 2004. These taste like a well-aged cigar with all of the characteristics that you expect to find therein: a smooth profile with a wonderful balance of strength and flavors. And while it does not come close to the complexity of the first W. Curtis Draper 125th release, the WCD 120 Redux , it is a very good cigar in its own right and definitely worth a box purchase. Having said that, there are two problems. First, the price is borderline outrageous for a Robusto. In addition, I honestly don't know how much longer they can age before losing too much more of it's profile considering that at this point, the wrapper is-12 years-old and the filler and binder are 16-years-old. Buy these to smoke, not to age.

Once in a while I come across a cigar in which I can't help but draw too frequently because I enjoy the flavors so immensely. When it comes to Dominican tobacco, if you're not looking towards a pricey Davidoff, this La Aurora 100 Años Belicoso is the one to go to.
