Until recently, the Plasencia family was mostly known for producing cigars for others. That changed in 2016 with the Alma Fuerte, the company’s first cigar ultra premium cigar branded as their own product. The Alma de Campo is the followup. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The Alms de Campo was released at the 2017 IPCPR Convention & Trade Show. The cigar is a Nicaraguan puro blended tobaccos only coming out of the company’s own fields. The cigars are packed in boxes of 10 cigars, that also double as an ash tray. Alma del Campo has 5 sizes: Travesía (6 1/2 x 54), Sendero (6 x 56), Madroño (6 1/2 x 58), Guajiro (5 1/2 x 54), and Tribu (5 x 52) — $13.50.

The Plasencia Alma del Campo is the second release in a planned five-part series, following the highly-rated Alma Fuerte, which was introduced in the fall of 2016. The final three, while not yet on the market, have already been named—Alma del Rio, Alma del Fuego, and Alma del Cielo. Produced in five vitolas, including the robusto-sized Tribu smoked for the review, the cigars are constructed with a Nicaraguan wrapper, a Nicaraguan binder, and Nicaraguan filler tobaccos exclusively from the Plasencia farms. The excellently-constructed Tribu delivers primary tasting notes of espresso, earth, hay, and light manure, along with more subtle aromas and flavors of anise, cinnamon, dried fruits, oatmeal, peanuts, and pepper. It is approachable by both the novice and the more experienced cigar enthusiast.

Today I’m smoking a small-batch cigar from a family who has undoubtedly made cigars you’ve smoked before, even if you haven’t smoked this one: Plasencia Alma del Campo. I’m smoking a 6.5-by-54 box-pressed Toro called the Travesia. Alma del Campo translates to “soul of the country” or “soul of the field.” The Plasencia family has been growing tobacco for generations, and they produce several cigars for big brands, including Romeo y Julieta, Rocky Patel, and Alec Bradley, on an extensive network of farms and factories in Nicaragua and Honduras.

I’ve always preferred the bolder Alma Fuerte line compared to the Alma del Campo line. As it turns out, box-pressing isn’t going to change my overall opinion. Paprika-dominated retrohales aside, I almost find the Alma del Campo to be too balanced and as such, a bit boring. It checks the boxes in terms of having obvious flavor transitions, construction is very good and there are no rough spots, but if I was going to spend this much money and time to smoke a cigar, I’d want a bit more excitement. All that being said, this is still a very good cigar and a great extension for those that have enjoyed some of the other Alma del Campo vitolas.

This sophomore release from Plasencia is the best cigar they have released year to date. The flavor profile is complex with a nice bit of depth and it has this great medium-full body and strength level throughout. Why the company did not have their own brand years ago baffles me, but I am glad they are here now.
