Given the original score of Plasencia Cosecha 151 La Musica, I was particularly diligent in not looking at my notes from that review until after I'd smoked the redux cigar, as while I remember enjoying it, I didn't want to prime my mind with exactly why. After two years in the humidor, the cigar is still dynamic and full of transitions, including plenty of the refined terroir flavor that makes Honduran tobacco shine when grown, processed, and rested as it needs to be to unlock the best it has to offer. While it's tough to compare a single cigar to three smoked two years prior, there are still some consistencies. The progression of flavors is largely similar, though some of the swings now seem a bit more pronounced than my notes would suggest they did originally. The construction remains fantastic, and the overall experience continues to be on par with what the cigars originally offered. This is a solid reminder that the Plasencia Cosecha 151 is an absolutely fantastic line and one that should be smoked at any opportunity.

Premium cigars are typically made with tobaccos harvested from different years, but the all-Honduran Plasencia Cosecha 151 line is made entirely of leaves from one particular season that the Plasencia family felt was exceptional. This vintage-specific blend comes from a 2016-2017 harvest, which marks the Plasencias’ 151st since 1865, according to family records. La Musica consists mostly of Criollo ’98 tobacco, and every puff of this robusto is like taking a bite of Christmas fruitcake as a chorus of baking spices, candied fruit, molasses and walnut notes all harmonize leaving a rum-barrel finish to bring the whole holiday effect home.

Plasencia Cigars announced their new line, Plasencia Cosecha 149, back at the 2021 PCA trade show and began shipping it in November. This is the second cigar in their “Cosecha” series following the Cosecha 146 that came out in 2017 which we reviewed here. The word “cosecha” translates to “harvest” in Spanish and refers to the 149th harvest of the field that this tobacco came from which took place in 2014. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend for Plasencia Cosecha 149 is a Honduran puro with tobacco all grown at Plasencia farms. The wrapper is a Honduran Olancho grown in San Agustín, the binder comes from Jamastran Valley, and the fillers are from Jamastran Valley, Olancho San Agustín and Talanga. It is available in three vitolas: Santa Fe Gordito 4.875 x 60 $12.00, La Vega Robusto 5 x 52 $13.00, and Azuacualpa Toro 6 x 52 $14.50. All of the vitolas are box-pressed and comes in 10-count boxes.

The consistent medium-to-medium-plus intensity helps to boost the cigar's flavor-forward profile. Towards the end, a drier texture dominated by lingering black pepper prevails, concluding flawlessly with a steady 8/10 draw. The Cosecha 151 offers a nuanced adventure through rich earthiness and aged wood kissed with pepper.

I’m smoking a 5-by-52 Robusto from Plasencia called La Vega in the company’s popular Cosecha 149 blend. Cosecha means “harvest” in Spanish. Plasencia Cosecha 149 is part of a series named for the number of consecutive years the Plasencia family has been planting and growing tobacco, 149 in this case. That’s an impressive stat. Don Eduardo Plasencia was the first Plasencia to grow tobacco in Cuba in 1865, and the family has been farming tobacco throughout Central America over several generations.

I equate the experience with the Plasencia Cosecha 149 La Vega to drinking a nice high rye bourbon, focusing on a nuanced blend of spices, but also having enough softer flavors of roasted nuts. The spice delivery was unique and not your traditional spices, centered around baking spices, white pepper spice and a hint of Chinese five spice. Well done and will be back for more.
