Southern Draw came out the with Cedrus line at the 2018 IPCPR trade show. It had one size, The Hogan, a 5.5″ x 52 box-pressed belicoso that came in unique numbed boxes of 10. Cedrus was the fifth core line introduced by Southern Draw. Last year, Southern Draw announced several new sizes for the Cedrus including Robusto 5.5 x 54, Toro 6.0 x 52, and Gordo 6.5 x 60 box-pressed like the original. Along with the new sizes came simpler packaging for the boxes and in counts of 20. Earlier this year, Southern Draw announced a lancero version at TPE following the likes of Rose of Sharon Lancero, Jacobs Ladder Lancero, and Kudzu Lancero. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The name Cedrus comes from Cedrus libani or Lebanese Cedar trees that were highly desirable in ancient woodworking. The wood known for its firm core and pleasant scent was used building materials in Holy temples, palaces and even sailing vessels. Cedar wood today is important to the cigar world as it is used in many humidors and sometimes wraps a cigar instead of cellophane. People also use cedar spills to light cigars. The blend for Cedrus uses a “late harvest” Besuki wrapper that was grown in the fertile soils of the Jember Region of Java, Habano 2000 binder from Esteli, Nicaragua, and the following fillers: Viso: Piloto Cubano from the Dominican Republic, Criollo 98 from Esteli, Nicaragua, Habana 92 Seco from Quilali, Nicaragua, and Corojo 99 Ligero from Jalapa, Nicaragua. Cedrus is rolled like all other Southern Draw cigars at Tabacalera AJ Fernandez Cigars de Nicaragua S.A. in Estelí in Nicaragua. Cedrus is a regular production cigar, but is made in smaller quantities.

Cigar Aficionado · Apr 1, 2021
This thin, lancero-style cigar is rolled with a dark wrapper and uncut foot, yet it draws quite well. Its spicy notes of ground red pepper are bridged by snaps of leather and coffee that lead to a sweeter toffee character and caramel finish.

I was intrigued to hear Robert Holt refer to the Cedrus as Southern Draw's "most distinguished tasting cigar," and in all honesty was fairly dubious about such a claim. However, I will put my hand up proudly and say that I was wrong and this cigar is quite good and much more refined than what I have experienced from Southern Draw in the past. While I can't say I picked up all of the spice and herbal notes that were specifically mentioned, there is certainly depth and complexity in this cigar, with the second third consistently being far ahead of the first and final thirds, which showed the most variance among the three samples I smoked. It's not a gut punch, something I consider to be a critical component of being a refined smoke, yet it never lacks in palate stimulation and never takes a puff off. Capped off by a nearly impeccable draw, each one of these was a pleasure to smoke and one I'd highly recommend giving a try if you're looking for something to dive headfirst into and savor for nearly two hours of very enjoyable smoking.

Holt's Staff Reviews · Feb 22, 2023
We’ve received a decent influx of new smokes from Southern Draw over the past few months, and today I’m smoking the Cedrus blend in a 5.5-by-54 Robusto. I’ve already reviewed Jacob’s Ladder and Rose of Sharon from Southern Draw, which I scored 90 points and 88 points, respectively. Most Southern Draw cigars fall into the $10-12 price range. Southern Draw cigars are blended and handcrafted in Esteli, Nicaragua, at the AJ Fernandez cigar factory. As an award-winning cigarmaker and one of today’s biggest blenders in Nicaragua, AJ has been a key player in the success of Southern Draw cigars.Read full review on Holt's Staff Reviews
Southern Draw Cedrus The Hogan
Developing Palates · Nov 21, 2018 · August 2018
With the Southern Draw Cedrus The Hogan, I enjoyed the interplay of the chocolate initially being dark chocolate and eventually moving into a fudge and brownie like type of chocolate. That mixed with cedar and dry red pepper spice makes for an experience well worth searching out for, especially if you are well versed into the Southern Draw profile.
