In 2016, Southern Draw announced two new lines, Rose of Sharon and Jacobs Ladder. Both had a small release to beat the FDA Aug. 8, 2016 deadline. In early 2017, the Rose of Sharon which uses an Ecuadorian Connecticut wrapper had it’s wide release and it was not until IPCPR 2017 that the Jacobs Ladder would have it’s wide release. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Jacobs Ladder is said to be the companies’ stongest cigar. It uses a Pennsylvania Broadleaf wrapper and an Ecuadorian Maduro binder and fillers from Nicaragua, including ligeros from Estelí. At Launch, it was offered in three sizes: Gordo (6 1/2 x 60) — $10.99, Robusto (5 1/2 x 54) — $9.50, and Toro (6 x 52) — $9.99. Each size is comes in 20-count boxes and the toro size was also released in a limited run of 1,000 two-count boxes priced at $25.99. The name is in reference to the story in the book of Genesis in the Bible telling of the bond between heaven and earth that Jacob, son of Isaac, dreamed about. It’s also a symbolic reference to Ethan “Jacob” Holt, son of two of the Southern Draw Cigars founders, who provides sales and technical support for the company.

I’m smoking a Southern Draw cigar called Jabob’s Ladder Brimstone, which is a heartier version of the original Jacob’s Ladder release. I’m firing up Brimstone in a 6-by-56 Perfecto, one of a couple of small-batch sizes the company produces annually in this blend. Southern Draw cigars are blended by AJ Fernandez, and they’re handmade at his factory in Estelí, Nicaragua. I was looking for a sweet but strong cigar to smoke after a big barbecue. In my earlier review of the original Southern Draw Jacob’s Ladder, I enjoyed a bold mix of malty and peppery tasting notes.

If you’ve tried the Southern Draw Jacobs Ladder Brimstone blend, or its predecessor, you’re likely aware that this is a blend that isn’t shy with strength, and the new Lonsdale vitola is no exception. However, it’s not a singular or even defining aspect of the cigar, as the rich earthiness does a very good job setting the base of the profile, while the swings between wood and creaminess keep the palate engaged. But the real standouts of the experience are the retrohales, which are bright, vibrant, punchy and any number of other words. While full-bodied cigars aren’t always capable of balancing strength with flavor, the Southern Draw Jacobs Ladder Brimstone Lonsdale does a remarkably impressive job in that task, with very good construction only enhancing the experience. If full-bodied cigars with stellar retrohales are your thing, the Southern Draw Jacobs Ladder Brimstone Lonsdale is definitely worth a try.

Definitely a fuller strength cigar that also delivers on flavor. This is a great addition to the Southern Draw portfolio and one I'm looking forward to smoking more of and trying the other vitolas. If you're a fan of the brand and like fuller strength offerings, then this is a must try.

This extra-long cigar develops earthy and cedar aromas and those of roasted coffee beans; there is also slightly sweet bitter chocolate with black pepper and a lot of herbal spice.
