An earthy, leathery belicoso that shows notes of freshly ground coffee beans and chocolate that meld with touches of pepper and hearty wood. The finish is sweet.

For Tatuaje ‘s 15th Anniversary, Pete Johnson, Owner, decided to bring back two old blends from the past. Both were released in the same two vitolas: a 5 1/2 x 52 Belicoso Fino and a 6 1/2 x 52 Torpedo Grande. The blends were originally released at the Grand Havana Room in 2004 and continued until 2006. These cigars began shipping in July. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blends are identical except for the wrapper, which uses a different shade of the same varietal, Ecuadorian Habano Rosado Claro or Ecuadorian Habano Rosado Oscuro. Both come in boxes of 10. Being one of, if not the most trusted brands in the realm of boutique smoking experiences for the past 15 years, Tatuaje's anniversary blend has been on the watchlist of every ardent enthusiast since the cigar was first teased in the spring of 2018. The blend is a recreation of a limited run that Tatuaje owner Pete Johnson crafted in 2004, with the twist being that the cigars offer a precise sorting process for the wrapper—debuting in two rosado-hued variations (similar to Padrón's color-sorted natural and maduro variations). For the maduro, the cigars showed a pleasant draw and a smooth and silky smoke texture. And while initial impressions were quite positive (with smooth nuances of vanilla, anise, marshmallow, and campfire), the cigar's second half seemed to trend towards harsh. With high hopes for this ultra-premium offering, I can only hope that added age will buff out the cigar's rough patches seen thus far.

Those looking for the typical Tatuaje-esque profile will not find it here: the Tatuaje 15th Anniversary Ecuadorian Rosado Claro is light and creamy, with nuanced espresso bean, leather, butterscotch and oak flavors that have to be concentrated on rather than bold notes that punch you in the face. Yes, it a bit expensive, due at least in part to the fact that it is a Miami-rolled product, but I was impressed that it is a regular release as opposed to limited and I love the fact that it comes in boxes of 10. I have always felt that some of Johnson's best creations involve times he has stepped out of his normal wheelhouse—see the La Vérité 2013 and L’espirit de Vérité 2013 for proof—and while the Tatuaje 15th Anniversary is not nearly as good as those, it is a wonderful change of pace cigar with a wonderful profile that I will be smoking again.

In terms of the actual smoking experience, overall, I enjoyed the profile Tatuaje 15th Anniversary Habano Rosado Oscuro Belicoso Fino. Bolder, more rustic notes of cayenne pepper, white pepper, minerals, sharp oak and cream. Not typically the type of cigar that reminds me of Tatuaje but one worth checking out.
