Aladino is a smaller cigar brand that has been on the market for nearly 10 years. It was created by industry veteran Julio Eiroa, who’s known for bringing Cuban Corojo-seed tobacco to the Jamastran Valley in Honduras. The brand’s 85th Aniversario line—named for Eiroa’s 85th birthday, not the age of the brand—debuted earlier this year with a Robusto and Toro size. The line was originally meant to celebrate his 80th birthday, but the company waited until Eiroa felt the blend was right, and it appears to be a wise decision. The Toro, a Honduran puro, is a comforting smoke, with notes of almond paste and baking spices before a long finish reminiscent of a freshly baked cookie.

Make no mistake, the Aladino 85 Aniversario Reserva is a spicy blend: spicy on the finish, spicy on the palate, spicy on the retrohale. Having said that, the overt spice is tempered wonderfully by a nicely layered flavor profile, a list that includes cashews, cedar and a very interesting floral note that shows up both as a main note as well as on the finish. The spice is extremely well-balanced, and while it is sometimes aggressive, it is never overwhelming. There is also a decent amount of sweetness on the retrohale that ranges from creamy Kinder Egg chocolate to rich raisins, and the construction only ran into a couple of minor issues. This is one of the more enjoyable and interesting blends I have smoked this year, and it is well worth the effort to track down for yourself.

Truly a wonderful cigar and well worthy of the great 85 anniversary. The JRE Aladino 85 Aniversario Reserva Toro showed great composure throughout the entire smoking experience (and yes even within the final third!). The flavors melded well, touching on sweetness, creaminess, spice, stone fruit and minerals. COTY contender for me.
