The JRE Aladino Maduro is the followup to the original Aladino that made its debut back in 2015. The cigar was teased back in 2017 but didn’t fully make its way to shelves until 2018. It did have a soft launch at the end of 2018. The corona size was not one of the original sizes, this one in fact was released this year at IPCPR. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Initially, only four sizes were launched: Elegante (7 x 38) — $7.75, Cazador (6 x 46) — $9, Robusto (5 x 50) — $10.50, and Toro (6 x 50) — $11.50. A gordo was talked about but has never come to market, and a Rothschild was sold at soft launch, but hasn’t been seen since. The blend uses a Mexican San Andrés wrapper,Honduran corojo binder, and Honduran fillers.

I hate to say that tobacco from certain countries can be polarizing, but it seems that I’ve come across a number of people who either love or hate both Honduran and Mexican tobaccos. Bring them together and it seems to be a recipe for either a smash or an absolute bomb; for me, it’s the former. There wasn’t a moment I didn’t enjoy the cigar, with each sample remarkably consistent. The duality of the terroir is noticeable and appreciated, the pepper-forward profile is clean and direct, and the construction is as good as I can recall. This won’t be for everyone, but if you’ve gravitated towards the tobaccos from these two countries, you should most certainly gravitate towards the Aladino Maduro.

Big and dark with a slightly rough wrapper. Bold notes of earth, leather, pepper and herbs unfold but the flavors could use some more sweetness. The slightly bitter finish calls to mind a glass of fernet. The draw and combustion are both even.

The JRE Aladino Maduro Corona started with an average profile and remained that way until the final third when the heavy char knocked things down some. If you're a fan of charred wood and heavy black pepper, you'll find something you like here. I just felt it was too much and didn't provide an enjoyable version of those components.
