JRE Aladino Corojo Reserva Robusto

Last year, JRE Tobacco Co. released a followup to their regular production Aladino Corojo line: Aladino Corojo Reserva. The cigar itself, like the original, is unique because it contains 100% corojo tobacco from Eiroa farms in the country of Honduras. It originally came out in a single vitola, a 5 x 50 robusto, but this year the company released the same blend in a toro. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. This is a regular production cigar, but only in small amounts. Only 400 boxes are made per month. The cigars sells for $12 and are rolled at Las Lomas Factory in Honduras.

The warm, complex stew of mideastern spices coming from this cigar contradicts its dullish, matte wrapper. Each puff is loaded with notes of bay leaf, clove, cinnamon and cardamom atop a peppery, earthy core.

From nearly the first puff, it becomes evident that "newcomer" JRE Tobacco Co. has a hit on their hands. This is no surprise, with the cigar's star-studded cast utilizing a full, vertical integration to showcase a true, classic, puro blend. Experienced smokers from the days of the cigar boom should feel right at home, and most other experienced smokers won't find it hard to transport themselves to a nostalgic mind frame while enjoying this old school offering. Although, novice smokers may have a harder time finding the subtleties in the profile and may even be put off by the cigar's zinging spice in the nostrils. Minor gripes can be noted as more touchups than desired, a short and flakey ash, and a relatively short smoke time for the cigar's size/price. Overall, a stellar experience that is an easy recommendation.

I write these descriptions as soon as I finish smoking the third cigar. Top of my mind is trying to figure out how the third cigar finished so differently from the other two cigars. At the midway point, the three Camp Aladino Corojo Gorbustos were more or less smoking the same, but then they went down very different paths. Regular readers might be surprised to read this, but I actually prefer the third cigar’s red pepper domination over the more balanced profile the other two cigars had. I wouldn’t want it for the full length of the cigar, but it was a great way to finish the cigar and add a bit of a pep in the step. It will be curious to see how this line expands over the years. As of now, this first release is yet another solid cigar in a company’s portfolio that is chock-full of them.

The JRE Aladino Corojo Reserva Toro is simply fantastic and a great addition to the Corojo Reserva line. It offers those great flavors from the Robusto in a larger format and a format that really speaks to the American market. The cigar has complexity and depth from start to finish and the transitioning is great. This cigar is hard to beat!

The tart tones and the strong smoky note in the first half balance out this Robusto with chocolatey sweetness. In the second half, the cigar presents nutty aromas, herbal spice, and licorice. It tapers off super creamy and harmoniously.
