Aladino Sumatra
Cigar Snob · Jan 9, 2024
Honduran tobacco’s living legend Julio Eiroa has been growing Sumatra-seed tobacco on his farms near Danlí for the better part of a decade, but it wasn’t until 2023 that his company released the Aladino Sumatra. The cigar immediately grabbed the attention of our panel, and its lofty rating and spot on this list are well-deserved.

The toasty, leathery smoke of this matte-brown cigar is balanced by sweeter elements of caramel, raisin, cinnamon and brown sugar. A note of almond emerges before the nougat-like finish. It draws well and the combustion is even.

I have rarely come across an Aladino blend that I have not enjoyed when it comes to flavors, and the Aladino Sumatra Toro continues that trend. The profile is full of flavors that compliment each other nicely, including creamy cashews, cedar, white pepper and caramel sweetness, as well as an interesting—albeit fleeting—mint note in the final third. Having said that, I experienced some significant construction issues when it came to the burn; in fact, all three of the cigars needed multiple corrections with my lighter to stay on track. In the end, the Aladino Sumatra Toro is well worth the price of admission from a flavor standpoint, but be sure to keep your lighter handy.

This Honduran puro has consistently sweet roasted aromas, which are nicely complemented by notes of orange jam, pepper, and barbecue spices. It becomes stronger in the finish but remains harmonious and creamy.
