La Aurora celebrated their 120 year Anniversary in 2023 with a brand new cigar: La Aurora 120 Anniversary. The company was founded in 1903 and has the claim of being the Dominican Republic ‘s oldest cigar factory still in business today. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The La Aurora 120 Anniversary was first shown off at the Procigar festival in the Dominican Republic and the 2023 PCA trade show in July, and started shipping last month. The blend uses a Dominican Habana 92-seed wrapper, a Olor dominicano binder from the Cibao Valley, and Piloto Cubano from the Cibao Valley, Rep. Dom, Olor dominicano from the Cibao Valley, and Dominican Corojo fillers. The cigars come in four vitolas: Robusto (5×50), Toro (5 ½ x 54), Gran Toro (6×58) and Churchill (7×47). MSRP Ranges from $14.00 – $16.80.

The La Aurora 120th Anniversary cigar is a bold, complex Dominican cigar that has the taste and feel of the history of this multi-generational family company. The slow burn rate of this robusto gives you the time to enjoy light, complex flavors on a more robust-powered cigar. Primary flavor notes are of cedar, hay, and mineral salt, with hints of freshly ground coffee, oaky tannins, and citrus. I feel it represents both the strong history and tradition of La Aurora, all while making a path for their future in the cigar industry for the next generation.

There are some kinky veins to the gritty wrapper of this long cigar, which draws and burns evenly. Intonations of coffee, earth and spice lead to a cocoa powder sweetness and cedary finish.

Over the last year or so, I've noticed that I've become much more aware and attentive to the transitions that occur in cigars as the profile progresses, and the La Aurora 120 Anniversary Limited Edition certainly delivers in that department. Those transitions are dynamic and fascinating to focus on, as they bridge some very enjoyable profiles in the first two thirds. Even the transition into the final third is impressive, even if what that final section didn't quite match up to the high marks set by the previous two. Other than some brief burn issues with the burn line, construction was solid, as expected for a cigar of this billing. An impressive cigar with a very enjoyable progression of flavors that celebrates another milestone anniversary for La Aurora.

I enjoyed the La Aurora 120th Anniversary Churchill, and I thought it was a solid blend, but I was hoping for more complexity, depth and transitioning. Nice core flavor profile, really nice, but it needed more to pop and really celebrate 120 years. Cigar seemed young as well.
