Back in 1968, Edgar Cullman Sr.’s General Cigar Company purchased a factory in Kingston, Jamaica called Temple Hall. At the time the factory owned and produced a small brand called Macanudo. Under Cullman’s leadership, Macanudo became one of the largest cigar brands in the world. Earlier this year Macanudo announced another extension to their Inspirado line: Red. This is supposed to be the boldest of the line. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend uses an Ecuadoran Habano ligero wrapper and blended with Nicaraguan fillers including twelve-year aged Nicaraguan Ometepe, ten-year aged Honduran Jamastran and five-year-aged Nicaraguan Esteli, and a Jalapa binder. Macanudo Inspirado Red is rolled at STG Esteli in Nicaragua and was made available throughout the U.S. March 26th. The cigar comes in three vitolas presented in 20-count boxes: Robusto: 5 by 50 (box pressed) – SRP per cigar is $6.49, Toro: 6 by 50 – SRP per cigar is $6.99, Gigante: 6 by 60 – SRP per cigar is $7.49.

Mulled wine | Charred oak | Semi-sweet chocolate Big up-front spiciness. Cinnamon, ginger, cloves. That and some red fruit notes lead me to a mulled wine conclusion. Black peppercorn acts as a structuring note alongside/within charred oak. Semi-sweet chocolate, heavy on French vanilla inclusion, chugs along the top of the under-belly. Said UB is barnyard and dark earthiness, savorily-so. A bit of graphite minerality comes on at the 2/3. That's also when the sharp saltiness floods in and steers.

This oily, veiny cigar burns evenly, but notes of coffee, fruit and wood are faint, as are muted hints of chocolate. The qualities could be more pronounced.

Remembering back to my recent pleasure reviewing the Inspirado White (Inspirado Red's predecessor), I was looking forward to this one. Add to my excitement the blend of aged/vintage tobaccos, I was salivating with the prospect of the cigar's potential. Perhaps my high expectations are responsible for my eventual disappointment with this cigar. I only mention this because I know a lot of people would write this cigar off, sight unseen, simply by nature of it being a Macanudo/General cigar. But I was hyped and willing to fully embrace this cigar. Unfortunately, the experience flat-out lacked personality. From the lackluster band (50 years and this is the best you can come up with?!), to the over-hyped marketing speak, to the cigar experience itself, it just seems…contrived. Like someone in a boardroom concocted the blend based on a spreadsheet of inventory and market share. Whereas the Inspirado White seemed to achieve General's goal of creating a Macanudo that could speak to the modern smoker, the Red seems to be more of an attempt to make a Nicaraguan-based cigar for Macanudo smokers. As for the enthusiast/cigar nerd, I doubt they'll win any converts to the brand with this offering.

Halfwheel · Apr 19, 2018 · March 2018
It turns out that the color red is a very apt descriptive name for the Macanudo Inspirado Red, as the retrohale is loaded with red pepper and cinnamon, both of which are thankfully just tame enough to not overwhelm the rest of the flavors during most of the cigar. Unfortunately, the rest of the profile is fairly linear, but the overall construction is decent without being remarkable, with the draw being the obvious high spot on all three samples. While I was not blown away by this cigar by any means, blends with Ometepe are hard to nail, making the Macanudo Inspirado Red that much more unique. A decent cigar—especially for the price—and one that I can recommend trying, as long as you like a buttload of pepper in your cigars.

Back in 2018, Macanudo celebrated its 50th anniversary, and the folks at General Cigar, the brand’s parent company, launched Inspirado Red to commemorate the occasion. If you’re devoted to the creamy, mild taste of the famous Macanudo Café blend, Inspirado Red is an entirely different cigar, conceived for fans of stronger smokes. I’m firing up a box-pressed 6-by-50 Toro to outline an uncharacteristically potent profile from one of the most recognizable brands in the business.Read full review on Holt's Staff Reviews

In March 2018, General Cigar released a new Macanudo Inspirado cigar as part of the50th Anniversary Celebrationof the Macanudo brand. The new Macanudo Inspirado Red cigar is made with a blend of rare aged Nicaraguan and Honduran tobaccos wrapped in Ecuadorian Habano ligero. These cigars are available in three sizes, including a box pressed Robusto (5 x 50) that was sampled for this review. The cigars are very modestly priced between $6.49 and $7.49 per single stick, depending on size (tip: save about a dollar per cigar by purchasing online in a 5-pack). For more info, please check out thepress release. Macanudo has evolved during the last several years with the addition of some bolder and stronger cigars. The Inspirado Red is the latest step in that evolution. This is not a mild-to-medium cigar for beginners and occasional smokers, but a full bodied smoke that is meant for more seasoned cigar smokers. The cigar began with a good dose of pepper and spice flavors, but not too much. The box pressed cigar had a good feel, was very well made, and delivered a generous amount of smoke. The full bodied smoke gradually became a bit stronger after 10 to 15 minutes, as the pepper tamed down a bit and an earthy flavor with spice took over. The cigar held a long ash and had an even burn. Although the cigar never went out, a couple of booster lights were applied to keep the burn level optimal, but no touch-ups were needed just to keep the burn line even. It took me almost a full hour to smoke the five-inch Robusto down to two inches remaining. The cigar remained flavorful and full bodied to the end, with only subtle changes after the first 10 minutes or so. Although promoted as a bold cigar, experienced smokers won't have to worry about it becoming overpowering. However, beginners would most likely enjoy a mild-to-medium Macanudo more than an Inspirado Red. My first impression of the new Macanudo Inspirado Red Robusto is that this cigar easily deserves a rating of at least 4 points on a 5-point scale, and that some improvement is possible with age.

The overall conclusion of the Inspirado Red Robusto is that this is a well priced cigar delivering flavors some Equadorian Habano cigars much pricier simply cannot compete with. Given the $6 price point, this is worth at least a fiver to start with.
