Plasencia Alma del Fuego Concepción
Cigar Aficionado · Oct 1, 2023
Once the cigar burns past the uncut foot, the smoke becomes much like a balanced shot of espresso, full of roasted arabica notes, dried fruit, a bit of spice and a sweet layer of caramel. A touch of dark chocolate also joins the mélange.

The Plasencia family, Central America’s largest tobacco growers, shook the cigar world in 2017 with Alma Fuerte, which won Cigar of the Year. In 2019 they unveiled Alma del Fuego, which pays homage to Nicaragua’s Ometepe Island, the volcanic island where they grow tobacco that makes up a majority of the filler in this spicy and sweet blend.

To say that Plasencia 1865 has made a splash with its Alma series would be an understatement, and in my somewhat limited experience with all three of the existing blends, I think it's safe to say that Alma del Fuego is the best of the three. The cigar excels in balance, allowing the Ometepe tobacco to shine without dominating the profile, while the complexity is never disappointing and often quite impressive. The technical performance is also stellar, with not a single problem standing out from my time with the three samples. If you're game for something on the medium-full side, the Plasencia Alma del Fuego is a solid option, one that I have a feeling will be showing up in good positions on end-of-the-year cigar lists.

Holt's Staff Reviews · Oct 12, 2022
I’m smoking a recent arrival to the Holt’s warehouse aisles – Plasencia Alma del Fuego – in a 6-by-54 size called the Concepción. Autumn is a great season to spruce up my cigar collection because I’ve usually grown tired of my summer rotation by the time the temperatures cool off. Plus, I’m smoking indoors more and sipping a bourbon in lieu of a bottle of suds from the cooler at the campground. A heartier smoke from Plasencia cigars sounds like the right recipe.Read full review on Holt's Staff Reviews

After taking a break from new releases last year, Plasencia Cigars brought a new line to IPCPR 2019, Alma del Fuego. This is the third in the Alma Series, of which Nestor says there will eventually be a total of 5. This joing the Alma Fuerte and Alma del Campo. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Alma del Fuego translates to “Soul of the Fire.” This is a reference to the volcanic soils of Ometepe Island in Nicaragua where most of the filler in the cigar comes from. Alma del Fuego is a Nicaraguan puro with a sun-grown wrapper from Jalapa. It comes in three vitolas: Candente 5″ x 50 robusto, Flama, 6 ½” x 38 panatela, and Concepción 6″ x 54 toro. It comes in boxes of 10. Something unique about this cigar is that the box is an ashtray.

Sitting at the upper echelon of the newly revamped portfolio from Plasencia Cigars is the Alma Series. Each cigar in this series has been themed around different elements near and dear to the tobacco-farming spirit of the generations-old Plasencia family. The latest such example is the Alma del Fuego, showcasing an advertised fiery profile through the inclusion of highly aged tobaccos harvested from the volcanic soils of Nicaragua's Ometepe island. In the robusto-sized "Candente" format, the cigar proved well-built and consistent from start to finish. In addition, the cigar kicks off with palate-smacking flavor. Unfortunately, the profile didn't quite hold true to its fiery description, instead focusing largely on minerals and charred characteristics. A lack of evolution and any semblance of an "it factor" rendered the overall experience underwhelming, especially considering the cigar's ultra-premium price point.

The first third of the Plasencia Alma del Fuego Concepción really reminded me of Christmas for some reason, but after that, things became average until the final third when creamy coffee rescued the cigar from continuing to be average. I'm interested to smoke this in another vitola in hopes of seeing that first third profile last longer as I really enjoyed it. I would smoke this again and see this as a nice addition to the company portfolio.

Rating: 5 Out of 5 Stars, Both Cigar Lounge & CigarBy:Dr. Mitch Fadem Review of Pipe and Pint Cigar Lounge in Durham, North Carolina Saturday April 11 was my 75th birthday and my wife and I traveled to Durham, NC to visit our youngest son. He moved there last year accepting a position as a senior microbiologist with BioAgilytix, an international research organization supporting the global pharmaceutical industry with analytical services. To my surprise, there was a first class cigar lounge namedThe Pipe and Pintwithin walking distance from our hotel. As you can see from the photos below, this is a large place with comfortable seating, a walk-in humidor that is well humidified, and a bar serving wine and about a dozen micro brews from local breweries. I was greeted by Trent, the day manager who took me into the humidor and explained their excellent selection of top rated premium cigars. Based on his recommendation I selected a Plasencia Alma del Fuego (soul of fire), a cigar I had never smoked but knowing the reputation of Nester Plasencia for producing excellent cigars, it was an easy choice to make. While deployed to Afghanistan Plasencia sent the troops hundreds of cigar directly from his factory and I had an opportunity to personally thank him when meeting him many years later. The Plasencia Alma del Fuego is a well crafted medium cigar with a dark wrapper and a closed foot. The wrapper is Ecuador Habano (one of my favorite) and binders and fillers from Nicaragua. The pre-lighting aroma is a sweet cedar with a touch of cocoa. I found after lighting that it burned even, with a very smooth draw. The flavors ranged from earthy, nutty and caramel. The retrohale had a little bit of pepper. At the midpoint of the ciga,r more of the sweetness came through along with coffee and chocolate. The cigar finished with a nice mild espresso flavor and aroma. The cigar smoked for close to 90 minutes and ranks with one of the best cigars I have smoked this year. This is not an inexpensive cigar at $16, but the Pipe and Pint offers a 10% military discount to active duty and veterans. I went back the day after my birthday and purchased several of these cigars. My son and his wife gave me money for my birthday to purchase cigars. I would definitely buy this cigar again for a special occasion.Read full review on CigarCzars
