The famed Plasencia family makes it absolutely clear that they intend to be a big player in the realm of ultra-premium cigar offerings, introducing the head-turning Alma Fuerte as their first cigar under the new Plasencia 1865 brand. With a trio of large and/or uniquely-shaped cigars, Alma Fuerte has made a big splash in the craft scene since launching in late 2016. The most traditional size is dubbed "Nestor IV," offering a whopping two and a half-hour smoke time through its beefy, 6¼" × 54 toro grande vitola. The cigar's usage of ultra-select and aged tobaccos is noticeable, with HUGE flavor output at first flame. Flavors of sweet coffee, chocolate and marshmallow hot cocoa powder, creamy Nutella, and loads of mineral qualities lead the charge of flavors warranted of the cigar's price. The only gripes we can find are the cost (that's a biggie) and a little inconsistency between smoking samples—all were fantastic, but some didn't quite have the intense punch of flavor. Also, we can't help but assume the pattern of large ring gauges in the line was used to help justify the steep price. Hopefully we will see a thinner offering in the future, as this blend becomes more and more flavorful as you move from the largest to the thinnest sizes offered thus far.

I’m smoking a Plasencia 1865 Alma Fuerte in a large 7 by 58 box-pressed Salomon called the Generación V. This cigar looks impressive and requires a time commitment. If you haven’t smoked it, I’m not surprised. But chances are nearly certain you’ve smoked a cigar from the Plasencia family before. The Plasencia brand has been gaining traction in recent years, but the family is better known for producing cigars for a wide variety of major brands, including Rocky Patel, Romeo y Julieta, and Alec Bradley.

While on the shorter side, the Plasencia Alma Fuerte Colorado Claro Robusto Corto still packs a lot of flavor, regardless of what time of year it gets smoked. The cigar starts with a couple of subtle puffs, but, after that first quarter inch or so, it delivers all the flavor and experience of the bigger sizes in the line. Beyond that, the transitions and nuance of the blend remain, and while the time between transitions is a bit less, the blend's roadmap remains and the journey is just as enjoyable. A very enjoyabe with plenty of flavor for when time is tight, whatever the reason.

The Plasencia Alma Fuerte Robustus is quite inviting. I don't find the strength to be as much as some do with this line, but the body is definitely present and with that is a great amount of flavors. Complex with some awesome transitioning and depth throughout, the cigar will not disappoint.
