Punch Spring Roll

Blind Man's Puff · Sep 25, 2023 · Feb 2023

At the beginning of this year (2023), Punch announced that they were celebrating The Year of the Rabbit with a limited-edition cigar: Spring Roll. This latest release is the fifth edition of their Chinese New Year Series which previously has included: Fu Manchu (2022), Kung Pow! (2021), Chop Suey (2020) and Egg Roll (2019). This latest release honors the original. “ Spring Roll is the yin to Egg Roll’s yang,” a press release described. The release also mentions that the “Year of the Rabbit is said to bring good fortune,” and they “invite Punch fans to kick back and let the good times Spring Roll.” This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Punch Spring Roll is produced at the HATSA factory in Danli, Honduras. The blend uses tobacco from five countries including an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, USA Broadleaf binder, and fillers from Dominican Republic, Colombia, and Mexico. Punch Spring Roll also includes a signature shaggy foot and comes in 25-count “takeout” boxes inspired by the packaging of Punch Egg Roll which kicked off the Chinese New Year series. Only 5,000 boxes were made and each cigar has a price tag of $5.99. Punch Spring Roll measures 4.5” x 50.

White pepper | Cocoa butter | Duck sauce Rumor has it that if you unfold a Chinese take-out box, it becomes a plate. No one does this. I mean define a plate; then define a flat something anything that you can put food on. I taste that waxy paper here though, a bit sharply and greasily-so. However, mainly white peppercorn occurs in that vicinity. Elsewhere are apricots and chili sauce with a savory kick that might as well be called soy sauce in keeping with the theme. Punch Spring Roll

Halfwheel · Apr 25, 2023 · Feb. 1, 2023

While it would be easy to dismiss the Punch Spring Roll as a novelty given its name, packaging and possibly even its price, the cigar seems to be anything but. It is very well made and very flavorful, packing a hearty but not overpowering profile that is impressively rich and complex nearly from start to finish. While the profile doesn't change drastically when the wrapper and binder join the profile, it is enough to both notice and take stock of, not just in flavor but in the strength of the cigar and the body of the smoke. After smoking the three cigars for this review, I have only good things to say about the cigar, which manages to pack a very flavorful 90 minutes into a very affordable cigar.

Punch Spring Roll

CigarCzars · May 1, 2023

Punch Spring Roll is the fifth cigar in Punch's annual Chinese New Year Series. Spring Roll is a limited edition cigar that was released in February 2023, to celebrate the Year of the Rabbit. These cigars are made in Honduras with an Ecuadorian Sumatra wrapper, Pennsylvania Broadleaf binder, and a blend of filler tobaccos from the Dominican Republic, USA, Columbia and Mexico. Punch Spring Roll has a shaggy foot, measures 4½ inches in length with a 50 ring gauge, and is priced at $5.99 per stick. For more information, please see thepress release. The sample Punch Spring Roll cigars began with a modest taste of leather. After about five minutes, the shaggy foot burned down enough to ignite the wrapper, which initiated a gradual and somewhat subtle transformation in body and flavor. During the next 10 minutes, the body moved up a bit from mild-to-medium into the medium range, while the taste of leather intensified and was joined by a moderate amount of spice. These flavors remained until the end of the smoking session. It took me only 25 minutes to smoke each sample Punch Spring Roll cigar down to 1½ inches remaining. During that time, the cigars had a good draw, mostly even burn, and held a medium-to-long ash. However, one sample needed a minor touch-up at the 20-minute mark to keep the burn even. No relights were required. The first halves of the sample Punch Spring Roll cigars were more interesting than the second halves. These are decent and quick smokes for those times when time is limited. Overall, a rating of 3.25 points on a 5-point scale seems appropriate.

Punch Spring Roll

Developing Palates · Dec 29, 2023 · February 2023

The Punch Spring Roll had an average flavor profile throughout, but it felt like there was a good flavor profile hiding in there, the staleness just kind of held it back. I've experienced this with other cigars from STG and I'm not sure if it's older tobacco or what causes this. The price point is low, so it's an easy try, but it's just not something I really see myself coming back to.
