Tatuaje brand founder Pete Johnson recently released a new cigar to celebrate two decades in the business, Tatuaje 20th Anniversary, and I’m smoking it in a 6.375-by-54 size called the Grand Chasseur. I’ve known Pete for over twelve years and have always been impressed by the small-batch smokes he creates in Estelí, Nicaragua, with Pepin and Jaime Garcia, arguably two of today’s greatest cigarmakers.

When it comes to anniversary cigars, while they can exhibit any number of expressions of a company and its profiles, I’ve generally been of the belief that they should be refined versions of the company’s signature style, which is what this Tatuaje 20th Anniversary Grand Chasseur seems to be. It starts with a bright, vibrant profile driven by a lively habano tobacco profile, steadily dials it back, incorporates some creaminess, and then lets the blend simply do its thing, with a bit of an uptick in flavor that harkens back to the first third as the cigar comes to a close. An impressively refined blend that is a fitting celebration of Tatuaje’s two decades in the cigar industry.

Tatuaje started shipping their newest line this week, the Tatuaje 20th Anniversary. The Tatuaje 20th Anniversary was first shown off at the 2023 PCA Convention & Trade Show this past July. It was originally planned for an August launch, but was pushed to October due to a logistical challenge coinciding with the release of The Face Redux 3. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The blend for the Tatuaje 20th Anniversary uses an Ecuadorian habano -seed wrapper, Nicaraguan double binder and Nicaraguan filler. It comes in two vitolas: Grande Merveille 6 1/8 x 46 $13.00 and Grand Chasseur 6 3/8 x 54 $14.00. The Tatuaje 20th is a regular production line that is rolled at My Father Cigars S.A. in Estelí, Nicaragua.

The Tatuaje 20th Anniversary Grande Merveille is a fantastic release and one of the best Nicaraguan releases from Tatuaje in some time. Maybe even My Father as well. The blend was complex and grabbed my attention throughout. It was balanced while still delivering a nice strength and body level.
