Drew Estate Undercrown Maduro Corona Pequeña

Drew Estate brought a new size of Undercrown Maduro and Shade blends to TPE 2020, a 4 x 44 Corona Pequeña. The new size uses the same blends as their larger counterparts which, for the Maduro, includes a Mexican San Andres Maduro wrapper, Connecticut Stalk Cut and Sun cured Habano binder, and Brazilian and Nicaraguan fillers. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. The Undercrown Maduro Corona Pequeña was designed to be a shorter smoke for the winter months. They come in unique boxes of 32 cigars that sell for $176 a box.

one: Well-built. tight seams, excellent medium tension'd draw. No hard/soft spots, bupkis insofar as softening of pack during progression. A re-touch at half-inch in is mandated, then cruise-control burn on-down. Fully a smoky-smoke out-put off foot and into mouf. Rather chewy, smooth texture. Mulling-spice, red pepper, milk chocolate, honey graham. two: Burnt-offerings are a pale sheath of an easy inch at-a-time. More smoke! Chai tea addition. Quite rich, but too cleansed by citrus bits. An imposing Churchill with a dark wrapper that foreshadows the cigar’s rich, precise notes of dark chocolate and licorice. The licorice notes recede a bit for a heavier, denser cocoa finish. Both the draw and burn are even.

Small vitolas, such as the one that the Undercrown Maduro Corona Pequeña comes in, aren’t always great expressions of a blend, but in the case of this cigar it does work out pretty well. There are points where the flavor is a bit sharper than I would have liked, something that I don’t recall the thicker vitolas offering, but it’s not enough to sour the overall experience. Both from a technical perspective and one of flavor, this is an easy cigar to smoke thanks to fantastic construction and combustion, while the flavors are very agreeable to my palate from start to finish. There is a bit of robustness and sharpness that might not work for everyone, but this is a good reminder that the Undercrown is a solid and reliable blend in whatever vitola you choose to smoke it.

Smoking the Drew Estate Undercrown Maduro Corona Pequeña has resurrected my interest in the brand, and I will definitely be smoking some of the original vitolas the next time I go to the shop. This is a terrific small cigar and great for when you don't have much smoking time. There is a lot of flavor in the cigar and the second third is magnificent.
