After securing a special varietal of Ecuadoran Sumatra-Seed Sun-Grown tobacco that Drew Estate has allegedly been on the hunt for for fifteen years, the brand makes good use of the new tobacco by introducing a highly-requested natural-shade alternative to the Undercrown series. This new wrapper is used in conjunction with Nicaraguan fillers and the Liga Privada T52 wrapper leaf—incorporated as the Sun Grown's binder, as with the original Undercrown cigars. The result is a unique flavor profile that clearly stands on its own, being perhaps the most distinct cigar in Drew Estate's lineup. Tangy flavors abound, accompanied by zesty peppercorns, cheek-puckering minerals, cinnamon spice, and the cigar's "it factor" flavor of butter/toffee/salt that hits the palate hard and keeps you coming back. At its peek, the flavors teeter from medium-plus to nearly full, although the overall experience leans more towards medium body. An occasional lacking of sweetness is one of my only real complaints—this makes more sense at the cigar's start, building to something great at the tail end of the first third, but the dry-textured finale was a bit more disappointing. The cigar has its moments of deep flavors, though complexity is not what will keep you coming back. Instead, it's a solid cigar with slightly atypical flavors that can be smoked on nearly any occasion.

In July 2017, Drew Estate Announced a Sun Grown version their Undercrown cigar. This would make its third line extension. The Drew Estate Undercrown Sun Grown Corona has an Ecuadorian Sumatra Sun Grown wrapper, Connecticut River Valley Stalk Cut/Cured Sun Grown Habano binder, and fillers from Nicaragua. A filler ligero leaf from the Nueva Segovia region along the border with Honduras has been extensively aged and increases the strength. This cigar was reviewed blind (no bands) by a panel of at least 4 reviewers. They did not know what they were smoking beforehand. The scores are an average of all the reviewers' scores with outliers removed. All of our cigars reviewed are shipped to the panelists with Boveda packs to ensure optimal smoking experience. Undercrown Sun Grown Dojo Dogma

I wish that I had something more enlightening to say, but I think this cigar starts and ends with the idea that I've never been enamored by the Undercrown Sun Grown line. I've yet to find a size of the Sun Grown that really puts a smile on my face and this is no different. I don't think it's really any better or worse than the rest of the Undercrown Sun Grown line, so if you've had positive experiences before this could be fine for you. For me, I'll stick to the original Undercrown Maduro line, which is far and away my favorite of the trio.

I’m smoking a 5 by 54 Robusto beloved by boutique enthusiasts: Liga Undercrown Sun Grown. More than a decade ago, Drew Estate, best known for producing the infused Acid brand, launched a pair of non-flavored cigars – Liga Privada No. 9 and Liga Privada T52 – that quickly became big hits with fans of small-batch cigars, but supplies were limited and they sold out fast. To keep up with demand, the folks at Drew Estate tweaked the blend and debuted a less expensive version called Liga Undercrown, which I detailed a while back in a previous staff review.

The flavor profile of the Drew Estate Undercrown Sun Grown Flying Pig was primarily oak and earthiness but had some added cinnamon at the beginning and added some mustiness and char towards the end. This is definitely an enjoyable cigar and has me looking forward to smoking more in this vitola as well as the others.
